About the Department

Under general supervision of the Wastewater Collections Supervisor, assists in all areas of the Wastewater Department, performs a full array of duties assigned to classes in the Wastewater Collection System Worker series, including skilled and semi skilled work in the City's wastewater collection systems; assists other Wastewater maintenance units when assigned; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; performs other related duties as required. 

Position Duties

Wastewater Collection System  Worker I
The Wastewater Collection System Worker I is the apprentice level class within the Wastewater Collection System Worker series.  Incumbents within this classification initially perform routine and less complex duties and responsibilities and steadily receive more complex duties and responsibilities as experience is gained.  Typical incumbents can reasonably expect to progress to the higher-level classification of Wastewater Collection System Worker II after gaining two years of experience, completing the CWEA Collections Grade I Certification and successfully performing more complex and difficult tasks and responsibilities. Incumbents in this position may be required to work holidays, evenings, weekends and on call as needed. 

Wastewater Collection System Worker II
The Wastewater Collections System Worker II is a journey level position that is able to complete more complex tasks and difficult tasks with minimal supervision.  They are responsible for all wastewater and storm water conveyance system maintenance, replacement and inspection, maintenance and repairs procedures, final checks of repairs and maintenance.  Incumbents in this position are required to possess a CWEA Collections Grade II Certification may be required to work holidays, evenings, and weekends and be on call as needed. 

Core (Essential) Duties:
· Perform installation, maintenance, repair, cleaning and inspection of wastewater and storm water conveyance lines and pump stations, manholes and connections
· Operate backhoes, dump trucks, loaders, compressor jackhammers, hydro rodder vacuum units in the course of repair
· Operate video camera equipment in investigation of lines
· Maintain wastewater and storm water conveyance line maintenance records
· Contact members of the public regarding problems and potential stoppages
· Demonstrate a full understanding of wastewater and storm water conveyance line inspection and maintenance procedures and work methods
· Read maps and engineering drawings for location of wastewater and storm water conveyance lines
· Investigate line stoppages and associated problems
· Resolve minor repairs as needed
· Operate a variety of tools and equipment relevant to the operation and maintenance of wastewater and storm water conveyance lines
· Operate lift stations and other equipment

Minimum Qualifications

· Knowledge of wastewater and storm water conveyance system installation, inspection and maintenance
· Air tools, hand tools, video equipment and safe work practices used in the maintenance and inspection of wastewater and storm water conveyance system lines
· Safety procedures and methods associated with operating heavy equipment
· Knowledge of City's and the Department's policies and procedures
· Knowlede of applicable city, county, state and federal statutes, rules, regulations, ordinances, codes, administrative orders, and other operational guidelines and directives
· Make calibrated assessments and take required action(s)
· Make assessments concerning wastewater and storm water conveyance system repair
· Read engineering drawings and maps
· Perform heavy physical labor
· Understand and carry out oral and written instructions and communicate these instructions to others
· Instruct in and ensure safety methods and procedures as appropriate for construction job sites and conveyance system maintenance and repair
· Establish and maintain effective working relationships; communicate clearly and courteously with the City's internal and external customers.  
· Ability to work with minimum supervision.

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:Experience, Education, and Licenses:


Education/Training:

Minimum eighteen (18) years of age.
Must possess a high school diploma from an accredited high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
Must possess a valid California Class B Driver's License and maintain possession of such license during the course of employment, or have the ability to obtain one within one year.

Experience/License or Certificate:
Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for a Wastewater Collection System Worker I, a typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is the equivalent of one year of experience in collection system maintenance and possession of a 
CWEA Collections Grade I certification.  

Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for the Wastewater Collection System Worker II, a typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess a CWEA Collections Grade II certification and the equivalent of three years of experience in collection system maintenance.
