Job Purpose and Objectives:
Responsible for learning to perform the general operation and maintenance of the City of Emporia’s wastewater treatment facilities.
Job Competencies: Essential Functions include the following. Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing. Schedule and shift assignments and work location may be changed at any time, as required by business necessity.
- Visually inspects plant for equipment malfunctions and adjustments
- Maintains all pumps, motors, valves and compressors
- Collects samples and performs laboratory analysis
- Monitors inflow
- Adjusts equipment
- Operates belt press and grit chamber
- Transfers digested sludge from secondary digester to dry beds
- Cleans, sands and removes weeks for all drying beds
- Operates belt press and drives box truck from sludge removal
- Operates grit chamber and removes debris to landfill
- Cleans bar screen and removes debris to landfill
- Takes sewage samples for lab analysis and runs tests and analysis
- Takes sludge depth readings for control
- Cleans pre-sedimentation basis and holding ponds
- Performs custodian and ground maintenance work at facilities
- Makes chemical calculations based on test results
- Checks for methane gases
- Assists lab technician
- Assists maintenance mechanic
- Enforces and maintains compliance with all federal, state and local laws and ordinances
- Performs other duties as assigned or deemed necessary
- Complies with all organizational and departmental policies and procedures
- Operates all job-related equipment, machinery, tools and other aids as required or needed
- Protects and maintains any confidential information you have access to, whether oral, written, or electronic

Position Requirements:
1. High school diploma or other equivalent
Certifications / Licenses:
1. Valid KS Driver’s License
2. Class I Wastewater Operators Certification must be obtained within 1 year of hire
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
1. Knowledge of operation on all motors and manual values for control of hydraulic loadings
2. Knowledge of chemicals and gases and safety procedures for handling and usage
3. Ability to operate boilers, electrical control panels, piping valves and belt presses
4. Ability to receive, interpret and follow written and oral instructions
5. Ability to read diagrams and charts and interpret information
6. Ability to operate pumps, motors, blowers, trucks, bobcat, lab equipment, small power tools, gas lifter, chemical applicators, and other related equipment
7. Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work
8. Ability to fulfill all duties with minimal supervision and to work independently
9. Assess situations rapidly and make logical decisions in a timely manner
10. Analyze facts and exercise sound judgment
