Job Description

Summary:


Use manual, semi-automatic, flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products. Perform (with training) Mechanized welding, cutting, and gouging processes as required by the work activity.


Duties and Responsibilities:


Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits


Weld components in 2G, 3G, 4G and 6G positions in at least 6 processes. Interpret a NAVSEA approved WPS (weld procedure specification)


Use fillet weld gauges, V-WAC gauge, bridge cam gauge for first in line quality checks as welds are completed, according to the correct NAVSEA fabrication document


Set up or program power supplies with the ability to identify correct support gear needed for any weld process necessary to complete work activity


Proficient in oxy/fuel cutting, plasma cutting and CAC-A (carbon arc air) cutting, gouging, and scarfing of welds and beveling plates


Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind and/or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding


Detect and troubleshoot faulty operation of equipment and/or defective materials and fix as required then notify management if replacement equipment is needed


Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to join weldments, using processes such as GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, GMAW-P, GMAW-S, SMAW, SAW, Mechanized processes, and ability to set up stud welding gun consistently using any combination of at least 6 processes


Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material


Examine work pieces for defects, and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with NAVSEA specifications


Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as angle grinders, die grinders and needle scalers


Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers


Knowledge, ability, and proficiency in Fitting


Ability to work consistently with employees and assign daily assignments and coordinate directly with a general foreman or production manager to maintain delivery of scheduled project milestones


Expertly follows WPS to ensure proper mil-cert filler wire and base metals are used in accordance with the work activity to ensure NAVSEA specifications are properly met


Ensure that level one material control requirements are followed in accordance with the applicable QSPM documents


Perform all duties on an expert and professional level while being able to mentor 2nd and 3rd class welders to minimize rework and maintain on-time and first-time quality


Perform work outside of trade when required


Proficient in mirror welding


Work to a SOW and QA work package while expertly reading applicable drawings and VWI 3d models, as necessary


Required Qualifications:


Work Experience: Minimum 5+ years related welding experience, or accredited Apprenticeship Program graduate or Journeyman Certificate accepted in lieu of work experience


Ability to weld PQR plates to qualify the company for new processes


Ability to be certified to the company’s Level 2 VT NDT procedures


Candidate must have prior experience and qualification in accordance with applicable NAVSEA documents


Knowledge of a wide range of welding principles, processes, and techniques requiring correct weld joint identification in accordance with MIL-22D or AWS D1.1, and the ability to identify and correct weld defects prior to an NDT inspector showing up on site providing acceptable and constant first-time quality


Ability to interpret weld symbols and identify necessary weld sizes and joint configuration


Ability to maintain dimensions and tolerances to specifications


Ability to weld dissimilar metals


Ability to weld parts and structures that vary in size, shape, and thickness


Must be able to obtain and maintain access to assigned military/government installations as required for work activity


Preferred Qualifications: weld certifications in multiple processes as required per division needs


Certification and experience as a forklift and man-lift operator

Physical Requirements:


Involves heavy lifting, frequent stooping, bending, crawling, reaching and possible working assignments in overhead structures, confined spaces or beneath machinery either indoors or outdoors in the elements and noisy conditions.
