About the Department

The Youth Sports Lead Instructor is responsible for planning, coordinating, and leading youth sports and recreation programs for children ages 3–7. This position oversees the daily operation of assigned programs, develops curriculum and lesson plans, mentors instructors, and ensures consistent program quality across all classes. The Youth Sports Lead Instructor exercises independent judgment in program delivery, staff coaching, problem-solving, and participant engagement while serving as the department's lead resource for early childhood and introductory youth sports programming. Frequent evening and weekend availability is required to support programs, special events, and staff supervision.

Position Duties

  • Lead and facilitate introductory sports and recreation programs for children ages 3–7, including soccer, basketball, softball, and other age-appropriate activities.
  • Plan, develop, and implement curriculum, lesson plans, and program standards for assigned youth sports programs.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and ongoing coaching to instructors while monitoring program quality and participant experiences.
  • Exercise independent judgment in resolving participant concerns, adjusting program activities, and addressing day-to-day operational needs.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and recommend improvements to curriculum, staffing, scheduling, and program offerings.
  • Assist with instructor hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations.
  • Ensure instructors uphold department values, policies, safety standards, and customer service expectations.
  • Manage program equipment, supplies, and facility needs to ensure programs are prepared and operate efficiently.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for parents and guardians regarding program questions, concerns, and participant needs.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of new youth sports programs, special events, and community partnerships.
  • Ensure a positive, safe, and welcoming environment for participants, families, staff, and volunteers.
  • Maintain attendance records, incident reports, and other required program documentation.
  • Support department events, community outreach efforts, and special programs as assigned.
  • Work evenings, weekends, and special events as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Recreation, Physical Education, Child Development, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience working with children ages 3–7 in educational, childcare, recreation, or youth sports settings.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, or supervising staff preferred.
  • Knowledge of child development principles and age-appropriate instructional techniques.
  • Knowledge of fundamental sports skills, rules, and instruction for introductory youth athletics.
  • Ability to develop and implement curriculum and lesson plans for young children.
  • Strong communication, leadership, customer service, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in a dynamic recreation environment.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and special events as required.
  • First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications, or the ability to obtain them within a specified timeframe.

Other Qualifications

  • Work includes indoor and outdoor recreation environments with exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • Work requires standing, walking, bending, lifting, demonstrating athletic skills, and actively participating in program activities.
  • Work includes frequent interaction with children, parents, volunteers, and staff in a fast-paced recreation environment.
  • Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required based on program schedules and special events.
