Growing together. We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and operate cloud-based services that power large-scale, mission-critical platforms. In this role, you will take end-to-end ownership of features—from requirements and system design through deployment and production operations—while balancing new feature delivery with technical debt reduction. You’ll collaborate closely with product and engineering partners, uphold a high engineering bar, and help the team continuously improve how we build, test, ship, and support software. You’ll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week. Primary Responsibilities:<ul><li>Contribute to planning and execution of software development for new capabilities, including estimating, sequencing work, and identifying dependencies</li><li>Design, develop, deploy, and operate cloud-based services in a CI/CD environment with a strong focus on reliability, performance, and security</li><li>Balance delivery of new features with ongoing maintenance and reduction of technical debt, proactively surfacing risks and tradeoffs</li><li>Write high-quality, scalable, supportable code with appropriate unit tests, automated test coverage, documentation, and operational readiness (monitoring, alerting, runbooks)</li><li>Partner with user representatives and cross-functional engineering teams to clarify requirements, propose solutions, and implement necessary modifications</li><li>Collaborate proactively with other teams to remove blockers, resolve integration issues, and ensure smooth delivery across services</li><li>Lead by example through technical excellence—driving good design decisions, improving engineering practices, and mentoring others as needed</li><li>Continuously identify and champion opportunities to improve developer productivity, system maintainability, and the team’s responsiveness to change</li><li>Leverage enterprise-approved AI tools to enhance productivity and innovation by streamlining workflows and automating repetitive tasks</li></ul> You’ll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in. 
Required Qualifications:<ul><li>7+ years of professional software engineering experience building and maintaining production systems</li><li>Solid hands-on experience with C#, .NET, and ASP.NET Core in service-oriented or microservice-based architectures</li><li>Experience maintaining large, complex codebases with multiple services, shared libraries, and cross-team dependencies</li><li>Experience with API design, backend integrations, asynchronous processing, and debugging distributed systems</li><li>Experience with containerized development and deployment using Docker</li><li>Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, code reviews, and code-quality tooling</li><li>Experience deploying and operating production workloads on cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, or Azure)</li><li>Working knowledge of frontend development with React, TypeScript, and modern JavaScript tooling Familiarity with databases and data-access patterns in high-scale systems</li><li>Proven solid troubleshooting skills across application, infrastructure, and integration layers</li><li>Proven solid communication skills and the ability to lead technical decisions, mentor engineers, and improve engineering practices</li></ul> Preferred Qualifications:<ul><li>Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience</li><li>Experience with Google Cloud Platform (e.g., GKE, Cloud Run, Pub/Sub, Spanner, Dataflow)</li><li>Experience with healthcare or regulated-domain software</li><li>Experience supporting imaging, archive, workflow, or integration platforms such as PACS, VNA, or enterprise imaging systems</li><li>Experience modernizing legacy services while preserving backward compatibility and production stability</li><li>Experience with observability (structured logging, metrics, tracing) and production incident response</li><li>Experience with test strategy across unit, integration, and end-to-end test suites</li><li>Experience working with mixed technology stacks, including some combination of Java, Python, Node.js, and .NET</li><li>Experience improving developer workflows, repository health, dependency management, and platform maintainability</li><li>Experience with agentic development (e.g., building workflows that use tools, planning, and automation)</li><li>Familiarity with healthcare interoperability standards such as DICOM, HL7, and FHIR</li><li>Familiarity with event-driven/message-based architectures, protobuf contracts, and background job/workflow patterns</li></ul> *All employees working remotely will be required to adhere to UnitedHealth Group’s Telecommuter Policy Canada Residents Only: The salary range for Canada residents is $82,700 to $171,900 annually.
