Job Description - Senior Software Engineer

AxisCare is hiring a full-time, fully remote Senior Software Engineer to help us build, ship, and maintain the market-leading SaaS platform powering the home care industry, and to help us reimagine how software gets made in the age of AI.
 
We're no longer building the car by hand, so to speak. We're building the factory that makes great cars, with humans in the loop where the human touch matters most. We're looking for engineers who've already internalized this shift. Engineers who push AI tools to their breaking point, then push again three months later when the models improve. Engineers who move from idea to working software in hours instead of weeks, and who bring the judgment to know when the output is actually good.
 
There will always be a need for people who deeply understand our customers' most important problems, solve them with high-quality software, and run that software reliably in production. That's the work that endures, and that's the work we're hiring for.
 
What You'll Do
 
Collaborate with product leaders to spike on possibilities and prototype aggressively, often putting working software in front of stakeholders before the old process would have finished a PRD, then quickly iterate from there.
 
Mentor junior and mid-level engineers in code design, systems thinking, and driving AI agents effectively: when to trust output, when to throw it out, and how to maintain code quality when the machine is doing the typing.
 
Write backend business logic, extend our API, integrate with third-party services, build frontend UI, and tackle issues throughout the codebase. All using AI fluently as a force multiplier, not a crutch.
 
Improve system performance and resilience, upgrade our tech stack, and go after the pipe dreams that used to be too expensive to try.
 
Own what you ship in production. Home care agencies rely on our software to run their business every day, so we instrument, observe, and debug what we build. We treat reliability as a first-class feature, not an afterthought.
 
What We're Looking For
 
A product-minded engineer who deeply interrogates user problems before jumping to solutions. AI makes it dangerously easy to build the wrong thing quickly.
 
A systems thinker who looks beyond the element at hand to the broader system and the dynamics at play within it.
 
An AI power user with substance. You've moved past "I tried Cursor once." You drive agents to carry out real intent on real codebases, have opinions about where today's models break down drawn from real experience, and have habits for catching those failures before they ship.
 
A quality-conscious builder. High-quality software is both valuable to the business now and easy to change later. AI lets us change software quickly, which makes the "easy to change later" part more important than ever.
 
A strong writer. Remote work demands it, clear writing is clear thinking, and clear thinking is how you get the biggest impact from AI.
 
A team lead for 1–2 engineers, but also fully capable of taking substantial features from concept to completion solo.
 
Experience required:
 
<ul>
<li>5+ years as a professional software engineer on teams building full stack cloud-native web apps. Ideally with PHP, but any object-oriented language works too.</li>
<li>React apps in TypeScript </li>
<li>Experience building <a href="https://kevinsmith.io/separation-of-concerns-is-fundamental-to-building-high-quality-software" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">well-structured, readily comprehensible, easily maintainable software</a> that balances practicality with elegance </li>
<li>MySQL, using both PHP-based ORMs and raw SQL </li>
<li>Designing and building RESTful APIs, and integrating with third-party APIs </li>
<li>Able to work remotely from the Eastern, Central, or Mountain time zones </li>
<li>Qualified to work in the United States or Canada</li>
</ul>
 
What We'd Be Excited to Find
 
<ul>
<li>Experience building HIPAA-compliant software</li>
<li>Experience with EMR/EHR systems used in clinical care </li>
<li>Concrete examples of AI-enabled workflows you've built that meaningfully changed how your team ships. Custom agents, evals, prompt libraries, internal tooling, etc.</li>

The engineers who are just coders — the ones whose value came from being the person who could translate a spec into working code — are the ones AI is going to eat up first. You don't want that to be you. You want to get ahead of this by going deep on the things that still matter: system architecture, software design, and a real understanding of the problems you're solving. This is a senior-track position, and you'll find a team of senior and staff engineers deeply invested in your growth.

You'll join an autonomous project team working on our market-leading home care SaaS, built on a PHP web stack with a React/TypeScript frontend. You'll ship real features for real agencies whose operations depend on our software.

What This Role Actually Looks Like
 
You'll be building well-scoped features with oversight and mentorship from senior and staff engineers who are deep in this work. But a mid-level engineer is something very different in 2026 than it was two years ago. Concretely, we expect you to:

<li>Use AI as a core part of how you build. Not as a novelty or a copilot for autocomplete, but as a primary tool for prototyping, exploring, refactoring, writing tests, and shipping. We want to hear about the workflows you've developed, where agents work well for you, and just as importantly where they break down. </li>
<li>Push the tools until they fail, then tell us about it. We're actively mapping the frontier. An engineer who tries something ambitious with AI, hits a wall, and writes up what they learned is more valuable to us than one who sticks to what's comfortable. </li>
<li>Care about the problem, not just the code. Since writing code is no longer the scarce resource, understanding what we should build and why it matters to home care agencies matters more than ever. The engineers who thrive here get curious about customers and operations, not just tickets. </li>
<li>Ship quality software that's easy to change. High-quality software is valuable now and easy to change later. Moving fast with AI only works if the work holds up. </li>
<li>Manage your time to ship on time. Make meaningful progress on what matters and avoid getting lost in unimportant details. This is more important than ever when AI makes it easy to chase rabbit holes. </li>
<li>Share what you're learning. This is a team sport, and the team only gets better if wins and lessons travel. </li>
<li>Write well. Good writing matters here. Remote work demands it, clear writing is clear thinking, and clear thinking is how you get the biggest impact from AI.</li>

What We're Looking For
 
<ul>
<li>At least 2 years of professional experience on teams building web apps with the full PHP stack, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript </li>
<li>Experience building React apps in TypeScript </li>
<li>Working knowledge of object-oriented programming and relational databases (MySQL or similar) </li>
<li>Comfort with Git and collaborative development </li>
<li>Demonstrated, substantive use of AI coding tools in real projects. We don't need you to have mastered every agent on the market, but we do need concrete examples of what you've built with them, how your workflow has evolved, and a point of view on where they help and where they don't. "I use Copilot for autocomplete" isn't what we mean. </li>
<li>A mindset of software development as a team sport, preferring team success over personal achievement </li>
<li>A humble, always-a-student attitude. The ground is moving under all of us. The people who do best here assume they have a lot to learn and act on it. </li>
<li>Based in the US (Eastern, Central, or Mountain time zones) and authorized to work in the US or Canada</li>
</ul>
 
What We'd Be Excited to Find

<li>A habit of pushing AI tools past their comfort zone and thoughtful opinions about what you've seen. Agent-driven development, non-trivial refactors, prototyping throwaway versions to learn, etc.  </li>
<li>Experience building for cloud-native environments </li>
<li>Familiarity with HIPAA-compliant software </li>
<li>Experience designing RESTful APIs and integrating third-party APIs </li>
<li>A blog, a GitHub with substantive projects, recorded talks, discussions about tough product development decisions you've had to make, or anything else that shows how you think about building software in this moment</li>
