This project, led by Dr. Mahfuza Farooque in the School of EECS at Penn State, focuses on developing a personalized recommendation engine for microlearning content. The RA will play a key role in leveraging student performance data to deliver tailored learning experiences. This position is a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research that can enhance student learning outcomes. The overarching aim of this project is in the development of new knowledge and a new framework to facilitate the optimal design and life-long adaptation of civil infrastructure systems that rigorously accounts for diverse uncertainties in the life-cycle demands, system&#39;s state, and decision criteria. This project thus aims to offer an engineering response to infrastructure adaptation, mitigating the impact of evolving hazards on the built environment and society, and fundamentally transforming the basis for which infrastructure is designed, maintained, and adapted, to ensure a prosperous and sustainable future.We seek a highly motivated and knowledgeable individual eager to expand their expertise while contributing to the management and execution of research as well as mentoring of graduate students. The Postdoctoral Scholar will work on modeling the carbon and sulfur cycles through Earth history.The Postdoctoral Scholar will work primarily with Prof. Kimberly Lau at Penn State to:1.       Develop a model of carbon and sulfur cycling in the Phanerozoic, such as for the Eocene2.       Compare model results to proxy recordsKey responsibilities will therefore include:1.       Numerical model development2.       Presentation of results at scientific meetings3.       Preparation of scientific publicationsThe candidate for this position must have a strong background in biogeochemistry and global biogeochemical cycles, along with advanced scientific computing and modeling skills. Prior experiences with these topics are highly desired. Pending approval of the grant, the successful candidate will work on innovative research in hydrology, collaborating with Dr. Shen and other faculty members, while also participating in the development of research projects and providing support to graduate students.The postdoctoral scholar will combine foundation AI modeling and differentiable modeling (a genre of physics-informed machine learning) for hydrologic modeling to improve large-scale hydrologic forecast. The scholar will work with a large, interdisciplinary team on the next-generation land surface model. Especially, the scholar will integrate state-of-the-art AI and physics-informed AI techniques into an operational system. The contribution could bring benefits to society and reduce the damage of floods.Duties include, but are not limited to: <ul><li>Develop and implement novel modeling techniques.</li><li>Stay current with the latest developments and be willing to learn and adopt frontier methods.</li><li>Collaborate with research team members to design, execute, and interpret research findings.</li><li>Contribute to the development of high-quality research publications and presentations.</li><li>Provide support to graduate students within the department.</li></ul>Requirements:The Postdoctoral Researcher should possess a Ph.D. in hydrology, civil engineering, environmental science, or a closely related field by the appointment start date.
