Job Description:

The Department of Epidemiology (<a href="http://epidemiology.phhp.ufl.edu/)">http://epidemiology.phhp.ufl.edu/)</a> is strategically situated within the College of Public Health and Health Professions (PHHP) and the College of Medicine. Faculty members are jointly appointed to create synergies and collective strength, resulting in a competitive research profile and highly trained students who receive exceptional exposure to a variety of expertise. Our faculty and students have received numerous national awards in research and mentoring and are committed to excellence in training. The department offers an epidemiology PhD, Master of Science, and concentration in the MPH program. It is also home to two National Institutes of Health Training grants (T32). Faculty members are strongly supported by our college-level instructional design team for course development and delivery and by our research core for grant development and submission.
Dr. Jinling Liu’s laboratory (<a href="https://phhp.ufl.edu/profile/liu-jinling/">https://phhp.ufl.edu/profile/liu-jinling/</a><a href="https://phhp.ufl.edu/profile/liu-jinling/">)</a> at the University of Florida's Department of Epidemiology and The Cener for Genetic Epidemiology and Bioinformatics (GeneBio; <a href="https://genebio.phhp.ufl.edu/">https://genebio.phhp.ufl.edu/</a>) is accepting applications for 1-2 fully-funded postdoctoral associate positions, starting immediately. Dr. Liu has extensive experience in big data analytics, systems biology, probabilistic graphical models, causal inference and machine learning. Dr. Liu's research interests lie in modeling the rapidly-accumulating big data (e.g., muti-omics) in biology and medicine for precision medicine via a variety of statistical and machine learning techniques – one of her projects along these lines has been recently funded by a prestigious NIH Career Development Award for young investigators. She is committed to advancing precision medicine through her work. She is also collaborating with researchers in other domains for data analytics and decision making.
Liu lab has access to rich high-dimensional multi-omics data, including WGS, WES, DNA methylation, RNA-seq, proteomics, lipidomics and metabolomics in large-scale human populations. The lab is interested in integrating and mining the different types of data to understand the genomic causes and other biomarkers as well as the underlying signaling network for a variety of diseases including aging, cardiovascular diseases, brain diseases, cancer, et al., through novel statistical or deep learning methods development and application. The postdoc associates will be exposed to rich multi-omics data, a variety of diseases, advanced statistical and machine learning methods and wide collaborations with experts from different fields. Key responsibilities for the postdoctoral associates include multi-omics data analysis, novel method development and application, manuscript writing, research presentation at conferences, and assistance with grant applications and student mentoring.

Expected Salary:

$62,232 annually; commensurate with experience level and in accordance with current NIH postdoctoral salary guidelines.
Postdoctoral associates are eligible for comprehensive health and leave benefits and have access to libraries and other research resources available for faculty and postdoctoral associates. Additionally, postdoctoral trainees may receive funds each training year to support professional development (e.g., travel to workshops or national conferences, purchase of education materials).



Minimum Requirements:

PhD degree in computer science, statistics, biostatistics, biomedical informatics or related fields OR a PhD degree in biology or related fields.



Preferred Qualifications:

A strong background in programming (e.g., Python or R or C++) is essential. Research experience utilizing skills of programming, statistics, and AI are essential. The ideal candidate should demonstrate independent and critical thinking abilities as well as good communication skills. Prior research experience in analyzing biomedical data is preferred.

The College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position. The successful candidate will collaborate with Jane Bambauer, Myiah Hutchens, and Jieun Shin on research related to news consumption and audience behavior. Responsibilities include analyzing data, drafting manuscripts, and presenting findings at academic conferences.
This project is part of a Knight Foundation-supported research initiative examining public demand for confirmatory vs. truth-seeking online information. This project seeks to identify strategies to foster a sustainable online information ecosystem by encouraging engagement with factual information and truth-seeking content.
The ideal candidates will have demonstrated experience working with large and complex datasets, including collection, management, analysis, and communication. Strong programming skills (R, Python, or similar) and a solid foundation in statistics are essential. Candidates with expertise in computational methods, econometrics, causal inference, and experimental design are encouraged to apply.
A qualified candidate must hold a doctoral degree or have completed all of the requirements for a doctorate in a related field. This position is expected to begin in Summer or Fall 2026, with some flexibility in start dates.

Job Description:

The George A. Smathers Libraries is offering a graduate internship supervised by Dr. Borui Zhang in collaboration with Dr. Jonathan Nations (Florida Museum of Natural History). The project focuses on building an open-access, machine-readable database of mammalian dietary information extracted from decades of unstructured scientific literature. It integrates text data mining, NLP pipeline engineering, and biodiversity science. The graduate intern will construct and validate ground-truth datasets for an AI-driven data extraction pipeline supporting this effort. This internship is funded through the Smathers Graduate Internship Program.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The intern will:
<ol>
<li>Use authorized APIs to identify and retrieve relevant mammalian dietary literature, with emphasis on Mammalian Species Accounts.</li>
<li>Apply the project’s NER (Named Entity Recognition) pipeline to extract consumer (mammal species) and food class entities from full-text publications.</li>
<li>Systematically validate AI-generated annotations using professional annotation tools, building a rigorously reviewed ground-truth reference dataset.</li>
<li>Meeting with the Internship Director and faculty partner weekly to resolve ambiguous cases and refine prompt strategies.</li>
<li>Assist in organizing and cleaning metadata fields, standardizing ecological data for integration into the project’s GitHub repository.</li>
<li>Prepare technical documentation summarizing inter-annotator agreement metrics, common extraction error patterns, and recommendations for prompt and pipeline refinement.</li>
<li>Deliver a final presentation to UF Libraries and Florida Museum research teams summarizing methods, findings, and lessons learned.</li>
</ol>
SCHEDULE
10 hours a week.

$22 /hour



Required Qualifications:

<ul>
<li>Currently enrolled in good standing in a UF graduate program in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Information Science, Data Science, Biology/Ecology, or a closely related field.</li>
<li>Proficiency in Python for data processing, file I/O, JSON and XML parsing, pandas-style tabular manipulation, and basic scripting against REST APIs (e.g., NCBI Entrez) for literature retrieval</li>
<li>Experience with at least one NLP task: sequence labeling, entity recognition, text classification, or annotation of linguistic phenomena in real, noisy text.</li>
<li>Demonstrated ability to work independently on sustained research tasks with attention to detail and consistent documentation habits.</li>
<li>Comfort reasoning about linguistic ambiguity: you should be able to explain why a given span of text is or is not a valid entity mention and articulate the decision rule you applied.</li>
</ul>



Preferred:

<ul>
<li>Background or coursework in biology, ecology, or environmental sciences.</li>
<li>Prior experience with text annotation platform (e.g., Label Studio, Prodigy, INCEpTION, or similar platforms)</li>
<li>Familiarity with biomedical or biodiversity literature retrieval (PubMed/Entrez API, GBIF, BHL, iDigBio) or other large-scale scholarly text corpora.</li>
<li>Experience working with version control systems or structured research data repositories, comfort with JSON schema validation.</li>
<li>Exposure to transformer-based models (BERT, BioBERT, or similar): fine-tuning, inference, or attention analysis.</li>
</ul>
