 Our Interns will apply their education to meaningful projects in a team environment alongside a technical mentor. You will be exposed to many levels of management within our company concluding with an end of summer presentation to the executive team. Throughout the summer you will have the opportunity to acquire technical and professional skills, to participate in team building activities, and to enjoy social events in the Rocky Mountain region. &nbsp;This role involves developing and optimizing a highly reliable, on‑device AI chatbot designed to run on constrained edge hardware. The intern will help ensure the system delivers low‑latency inference, robust offline functionality, and flawless performance despite the real‑world challenges of limited compute resources, variable environments, and intermittent network availability.
 Job Duties and Responsibilities
 <ul>
 <li>As an intern, you will work closely with your mentor and other employees within the department to apply your knowledge and grow your skills both technically and professionally.</li>
 <li>Work with a fast-paced group of professionals to apply engineering and industry concepts to solve real challenges.</li>
 <li>Develop and optimize a highly reliable, on‑device AI chatbot capable of running on constrained edge hardware, ensuring low‑latency inference, robust offline performance, and seamless operation under real‑world environmental and network limitations.</li>
 <li>Work in an Agile environment and contribute to Agile ceremonies.</li>
 <li>Recommends solutions to problems/issues that impact the project</li>
 <li>Determines and examines software alternatives</li>

 QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, and Certifications)

 <li>Working towards - B.S., M.S., or PhD. degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field</li>

 <h2>Duties</h2>NIST's Physical Measurement Laboratory (PML) sets the definitive U.S. standards for nearly every kind of measurement employed in commerce and research, sometimes across more than 20 orders of magnitude. This position is in PML's Quantum Sensors Division, whose mission is to build the metrological foundation for emerging electronic, magnetic, and photonic technologies. They achieve this by developing high-precision measurement devices, systems, standards, and methodologies and applying them to address national needs. If you are hired as a Cryogenic Sensor Physicist for this division, you will: Lead the development and oversight of superconducting circuits designed to measure electromagnetic radiation intensity and polarization at sub-millimeter wavelengths. Optimize circuit performance by evaluating noise, dynamic range, and optical efficiency to ensure compatibility with large-scale imaging arrays. Manage collaborator interactions to oversee the successful deployment of NIST-developed sensor arrays in real-world applications. Advance cryogenic research by identifying new instrument applications and publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals to maximize global impact.<h2>Qualifications</h2>BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics; OR Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
