We’re seeking a future team member for the role of Senior Software Engineering Manager to join our Developer Experience (DevEx) team. This role is located in Pittsburgh, PA.
In this role, you’ll make an impact in the following ways:
<ul>
 <li>Lead, mentor, and manage a high-performing Build Engineering team, setting clear technical direction and career growth paths.</li>
 <li>Oversee the architecture and implementation of BNY’s central build automation platform, ensuring high availability, reliability, and security.</li>
 <li>Create developer-friendly templates, quick start guides, and troubleshooting tools to help feature teams quickly create performant, transparent, and compliant build automation.</li>
 <li>Optimize developer workflows by streamlining build orchestration, dependency management, and CI/CD pipelines to accelerate software delivery while reducing friction.</li>
 <li>Drive observability and resilience by integrating telemetry, analytics, and automated remediation into build systems to proactively identify and resolve bottlenecks and failures.</li>
 <li>Champion secure software supply chain practices, artifact management standards, and consistent build strategies across the enterprise.</li>
 <li>Partner closely with Product Management, SRE, Security, and application engineering teams to ensure alignment with developer needs and organizational priorities.</li>
 <li>Foster innovation by evaluating and adopting emerging technologies, including AI-assisted build optimization and intelligent failure diagnosis.</li>
 <li>Define and track key metrics such as build success rate, duration, cost efficiency, adoption rates, and developer satisfaction to continuously improve the platform.</li>
</ul>
To be successful in this role, we’re seeking the following:
<ul>
 <li>Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience required; advanced degree preferred</li>
 <li>10+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership role managing engineering teams.</li>
 <li>Expert-level competency in one or more modern programming languages (e.g., Java, Go, JavaScript, Python).</li>
 <li>Proven expertise with modern build automation and CI/CD tools (e.g., GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, Bazel, Gradle, Maven).</li>
 <li>Strong technical leadership skills with the ability to set architectural direction and drive complex initiatives across teams.</li>
 <li>Experience delivering large-scale, mission-critical developer platforms in an enterprise or high-scale environment.</li>
 <li>Excellent collaboration and communication skills, able to engage effectively with engineers, architects, and executives.</li>
</ul>
Preferred qualifications include:
<ul>
 <li>Background in Developer Experience (DevEx), Platform Engineering, or Build/Release Engineering.</li>
 <li>Experience with artifact repositories (e.g., Artifactory, Nexus) and secure software supply chain practices.</li>
 <li>Knowledge of observability systems, telemetry frameworks, and performance optimization for build pipelines.</li>
 <li>Exposure to AI/ML-driven build acceleration and failure prediction tooling.</li>
 <li>Prior hands-on software development experience building customer-facing features.</li>

As a Senior Principal Engineer - I&amp;O Automation, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing automation strategies across Linux/Unix, Network, and Platform Services. You will partner with infrastructure and architecture teams to identify automation opportunities that improve efficiency, reliability, and scalability. You combine technical expertise with leadership, collaboration, and a continuous improvement mindset.
 
You will report to the Manager, I&amp;O Delivery &amp; Process and be located at Cranberry Township, PA. This is a hybrid role with 3 days a week in office and two remote. Relocation assistance is not available for this role.
 
<h3>Key Responsibilities:</h3>
<ul>
<li>
Develop the automation roadmap for all infrastructure platforms.
</li>
<li>
Evaluate existing operational processes and identify areas where automation can reduce manual effort, increase reliability, and improve service quality.
</li>
<li>
Champion automation best practices, standards, and governance across Infrastructure &amp; Operations teams.
</li>
<li>
Lead automation plans from concept through delivery.
</li>
<li>
Design, build, and maintain automation solutions using tools such as PowerShell, Power Automate, Python, Ansible, Terraform, Morpheus, or similar technologies.
</li>
<li>
Ensure reusable, modular, and scalable automation patterns that align with enterprise architecture standards.
</li>
<li>
Communicate progress, risks, and results of automation plans to leadership and technical teams.
</li>
<li>
Ensure maintenance of documentation for all automations, including workflow diagrams, runbooks, and test plans.
</li>
<li>
Establish monitoring and reporting mechanisms to track automation performance and benefits (e.g., time saved, error reduction).
</li>
<li>
Ensure that automation solutions follow security, compliance, and audit standards.
</li>
<li>
Provide mentorship and training to engineers on automation techniques and toolsets.
</li>
</ul>
 
<h3>Qualifications:</h3>
<ul>
<li>
BS in Information Systems or similar degree or equivalent experience.
</li>
<li>
5+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering, automation engineering, DevOps, or related technical roles.
</li>
<li>
Hands-on experience scripting in PowerShell, Python, or similar languages.
</li>
<li>
Experience across variety of platforms such as Windows/Linux, Backup, Storage, and Network.
</li>
<li>
Familiarity with virtualization, cloud platforms, and container technologies (VMware, Azure, Kubernetes).
</li>
<li>
Facilitate understanding across multiple teams to ensure automation standards, patterns, and modules are adopted.
</li>
<li>
Influence teams to adopt automation-first approaches by demonstrating efficiency gains, reliability improvements, and measurable outcomes.
</li>
<li>
1+ years of experience with automation/orchestration tools such as Morpheus, Ansible, Terraform, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, or equivalent.
</li>
</ul>
 
We are committed to transparency and equity in all of our people practices. The base salary range for this position, which is dependent upon experience, qualifications and skills, is estimated to be $116,800 to $146,000 per year.
