Are you passionate about addressing homelessness in New York City?  Project Hospitality, the largest not-for-profit on Staten Island, is seeking a dynamic Housing Specialist to join Carpenter House, our Department of Homeless Service adult shelter.  In this critical role, you’ll be a key member who aids in the smooth and efficient daily operations of the shelter.  This role helps our clients to be able to make that next step in becoming housing ready as you help them to complete housing applications, view possible housing options and eventually move into their next level of permanent housing.  You’ll become a valuable part of the innovative and welcoming environment we seek to provide for the clients we serve.  This role offers the chance to leave a lasting impact on the lives of individuals by helping them find stability, dignity and hope when they need it most.

What we’ll expect you to do:

  • Be responsible for advocacy and providing assistance to clients in obtaining permanent housing
  • Make referrals to special housing agencies and assist in the completion of housing applications including Section 8 and NY/NY paperwork
  • Meet with clients on a regular basis to develop strategies to meet their housing needs
  • Coordinate permanent housing searches
  • Conduct housing workshops for the clients in order that they might become housing ready
  • Escort clients to view apartments and meet prospective landlords and real estate brokers
  • Attend weekly resident meetings for case conference purposes
  • Submit all monthly reporting in a timely manner.

Qualifications


The credentials and experience we require:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, previous housing experience working with the homeless, mentally ill, and chemically addicted populations preferred
  • Must have exceptional communication skills both orally and in writing with individuals and groups regarding complex and sensitive issues
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
  • Comfortable working in a diverse, team-oriented and crisis-responsive environment
  • Must have the ability to establish workload priorities and balance diverse projects
  • Physical ability to perform the essential job functions are needed
  • In addition, the Housing Specialist shall perform any duties as required to meet the needs of the program and the clients we serve
