JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB SUMMARY: Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Supporting, developing, and implementing individual health plans for each student; providing medical care and screenings consistent with state education and health code requirements; employing nursing interventions tailored to the developmental needs and physical capabilities of students; establishing and maintaining a hygienic, orderly, and safe health office environment; evaluating student health trends and communicating effectively with parents, staff, and healthcare providers.
JOB TITLE: District Nurse
SUPERVISOR: Director of Student Support Services
LOCATION: Central Administration
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Student Health Services
- Provide direct nursing care to students, including assessment, treatment, and referral as needed
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), and health-related IEP/504 accommodations
- Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders, district policy, and Michigan law
- Manage care for students with chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, seizures, severe allergies)
Health Compliance & Records
- Ensure compliance with Michigan school health laws, including immunization requirements and communicable disease reporting
- Maintain accurate and confidential student health records in accordance with FERPA and HIPAA guidelines
- Coordinate health screenings (vision, hearing, scoliosis, etc.) as required by state or district policy
District Coordination & Leadership
- Serve as a health resource and consultant for administrators, teachers, staff, students, and families
- Develop and update district health policies, procedures, and emergency response protocols
- Participate in crisis response, including medical emergencies and public health situations
Health Education & Prevention
- Promote health education, disease prevention, and wellness initiatives across the district
- Collaborate with community agencies, healthcare providers, and public health departments
- Support attendance improvement through health-related interventions
Required Qualifications
- Current Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) license
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification
- Knowledge of Michigan school health regulations and best practices
Preferred Qualifications
- Michigan School Nurse Certification (or eligibility to obtain)
- Master’s degree in nursing, public health, or related field
- Previous experience in school nursing or public health nursing
- Experience supervising nursing staff
