Job Description

About the Department

Wor-Wic Community College is accepting applications for a utility worker to perform renovations and repairs to existing college facilities, general maintenance, custodial duties and land management work, such as assisting with drywall repair, painting, wallpapering, tile setting, carpet installation, concrete work, door hardware maintenance, carpentry, outside building maintenance at heights up to 60 feet, operating landscaping equipment to maintain outside grounds, plowing and shoveling snow, and performing custodial duties. This position is considered an “essential employee” that may be required to report during non-scheduled days, evenings, weekends and/or holidays to assist with snow removal and other work situations. 

Position Duties

The following list is not intended as, nor should it be construed as, exhaustive of all responsibilities, skills or working conditions associated with this position.

  • Performs renovations, maintenance and repairs to existing college facilities, which could include wallpapering, drywall repair, painting, ceramic and VCT tile setting, floor tile replacement, concrete work, outside building maintenance at heights up to 60 feet, door hardware and key maintenance and/or carpentry
  • Operates tractors, lawn mowers and other landscaping equipment to maintain outside grounds, including mowing grass, pruning and removing trees, shrubs and bushes, seeding bare areas, raking leaves, applying mulch, fertilizers, lime and herbicides, removing clippings from walks and roadways after mowing and performs maintenance, plowing and shoveling snow, managing greenhouse and repairs on lawn tractors, landscaping equipment and college vehicles
  • Performs custodial duties, including dusting furniture, vacuuming and shampooing carpeted floors, disinfecting restroom fixtures, removing trash and replacing trash can liners, cleaning windows, elevators, floor mats and chalkboards, dry and wet mopping tile floors, and/or moving chairs and desks
  • Assists the HVAC mechanic, electrician and/or plumber in performing general and preventative maintenance on mechanical and electrical systems
  • Gives instructions to and monitors the work of land management personnel and/or maintenance workers assigned to renovation projects
  • Monitors work order system, completes work orders assigned to position and performs data entry required for completion
  • Sorts incoming and outgoing mail and delivers mail as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or the equivalent
  • Three years of trades experience
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer and Microsoft Office skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Valid driver's license with satisfactory driving record
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects

Other Qualifications

This is a full-time support staff position with an excellent fringe benefits package, including participation in the State Retirement and Pension System of Maryland (requires a 7% contribution from the employee). Days and Hours of work are Mon. - Fri., 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (1 hour lunch). This position is considered an "essential employee" and as such, may be required to report during non-scheduled days, evenings, weekends and/or holidays to assist with snow removal and other work situations. 

The starting pay for this position will likely range from $18.82 to $23.10 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
