Job Description

TITLE: Area Director

DEPARTMENT: Operations

REPORTS TO: Sr. Director of School-Based Clubs

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

SALARY: $60,000 to start

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM–5:30 PM (Club hours: 10:00 AM–7:00 PM; must be available for occasional nights and weekends)

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Area Director is responsible for overseeing the operations of assigned Boys & Girls Club sites, ensuring high-quality program delivery, operational excellence, and alignment with organizational goals. This leadership role focuses on strategic oversight, staff development, budget management, grant compliance, and fostering a safe, engaging environment for youth development. This role demands a dynamic leader with the ability to inspire teams, drive performance, and cultivate meaningful community partnerships.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

  • Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of program goals, grant requirements, and standard operating procedures across assigned Clubs.
  • Develop and manage budgets for each program and special projects, ensuring financial responsibility and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Provide leadership and technical support to assigned Unit Directors, focusing on operational excellence, community engagement, and program innovation.
  • Oversee the evaluation of Club programs to ensure participation goals and outcomes are met or exceeded.
  • Guide Unit Directors in staff development, including recruitment, onboarding, performance evaluation, and continuous training.
  • Plan and implement comprehensive staff development initiatives to promote professional growth and organizational leadership capacity.
  • Lead monthly committee meetings, driving actionable outcomes aligned with the organization’s mission.
  • Supervise the maintenance and repair of club facilities, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
  • Foster a culture of safety by ensuring that all Clubs adhere to safety standards, reporting requirements, and risk management protocols.
  • Mentor and guide staff through performance management, coaching, and structured accountability measures.
  • Fulfill reporting, training, and other duties as assigned by leadership.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal:

  • Collaborate closely with Unit Directors, Club staff, and volunteers to support the program delivery and operations.
  • Provide expert guidance on staff development and operational matters.

External:

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Club members, families, vendors, nonprofit partners, and community organizations.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in nonprofit leadership and operational management.
  • At least 5 years of leadership experience in multi-site operational management, with increasing responsibilities.

Required Skills:

  • In-depth understanding of Boys & Girls Clubs' mission, objectives, policies, and operational framework.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage operations effectively, including staff supervision, facilities management, and budget oversight.
  • Excellent communication skills—both verbal and written—with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated success in grant management and ensuring programmatic and administrative compliance.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to multitask, prioritize, and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to foster relationships with staff, partners, and the community.
  • Track record of driving operational excellence, ensuring safety, achieving grant outcomes, and developing staff for advancement.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Primarily office-based, with regular travel required to Club sites and events.
  • Must be available for occasional evening and weekend work, aligned with Club operations and organizational needs.
  • Must be adaptable to a dynamic, youth-focused environment where flexibility and responsiveness are key.
