The Activities and Recreation Center’s Intramural Staff are a key to the success of the Intramural Activities Program. Intramural Staff oversee the program by supervising and officiating all organized sports and activities. No officiating experience is needed, however; sport involvement/experience, or an interest in recreation is preferred. Individuals participate in officiating a variety of sports, leading captain’s meetings, program promotions, and peer evaluation. They are responsible for on-site risk management, enforcing all department policies, and providing on-going constructive space for participants and program improvement. Staff must be able to implement policies and playing rules in order to maintain an appropriate level of control, fairness, and safety.
Being an Intramural Student Staff member is a time commitment of a full academic year with an average of 8-15 hours per week. That time is used to assist in the planning and administration of the Intramural Activities Program, supervise intramural events, officiate games, and have regularly scheduled staff meetings. Those selected for this position will have extensive training, so they will be prepared to complete their duties and responsibilities successfully.
Duties & Responsibilities
Support Intramural Leagues and Events (70% of Job Duties)
- Attend Fall training, retreat, and additional trainings sessions
- Attend regularly scheduled team meetings, and one-on-one check-in with the Program Manager.
- Officiate leagues, tournaments, & events – must be available on Sunday evenings from 4-8pm.
- Assist in hosting and/or organizing virtual events
- Assist in needs assessments and data collections (e.g., Focus groups, surveys)
- Explicit knowledge and enforcement of Intramural policies and sport rules
- Self-selected tasks to support the program or complement individual skills such as graphic creation, video editing, training tasks, etc.
- This position will require physical movement throughout the entire shift. Physical movement will include, but is not limited to, running and or jogging at a pace consistent with an athletic event, walking and standing for long periods of time, and lifting sports equipment and gear.

Intramural Specialty Groups/ Task (20% of Job Duties)
- Serve as leader, or co-leader, of Intramural Specialty group to manage and ensure communication between individual Packs and Program Manager and/or other student total staff
- Self-selected participation in Intramural Specialty Groups (Packs) to assist in student administration within the program. These groups include Programming and Marketing.
Additional Task (10% of Job Duties)
- Serve as a resource for participants
- Advertise leagues and events to students
- Distribution of promotional or marketing materials
- Maintain communication between the office and campus community
- Assist in completing daily reports, scoresheets, equipment checkout, and other required paperwork
- Coordinate with Program Manager of Intramurals and Facilities to assess the desires and needs of the campus community
Required Qualifications
- Currently an enrolled UW Bothell student (at least 6 credits)
- All student employees are required to maintain a quarterly and cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to actively listen and empathize with others
- Positive attitude and willingness to step outside of one’s comfort zone
- Flexibility with schedules through the duration of the job
- Willing and able to work nights and weekends
Preferred Qualifications
- Background/interest in sports or recreation as either a participant, coach, and/or official.
- Background/interest is marketing and promotion of programs.
- Experience in event management/hosting.
All new student employees must also complete UW's online Title IX course about preventing and responding to sex-and gender-based violence and harassment.
Hiring Process
- Students apply via Interfolio.
- Selected applicants will then be asked to attend a mandatory training session which will allow applicants to learn about the various job requirements, familiarize themselves with the different positions and then display foundational skills of an official (tryout).
- This training session date will be confirmed with the applicant and Program Manager.
- Second round interviews may be held as needed.
- If the prospective official completes the Training Session and displays foundational skills as an official, they will be hired and start dates/onboarding steps will be emailed.
- Hired students will be hired on a probationary status. To end probation, staff members are required to complete all ARC and University mandated training sessions.
