On-site position in Augusta. Working hours of Monday-Thursday 7:00am-5:30pm. 

Position Overview

An Immunohematology Specialist Team Lead is a clinical laboratory scientist with a broad knowledge of procedures routinely performed in a medical laboratory and a working knowledge of all procedures performed in a relevant specialty area. This role primarily involves the application of this knowledge through the performance of analytical related tasks using blood or blood products, the correlation of test results and the solution of testing problems, and the continued development of operational skills through daily workload responsibilities. The Immunohematology Specialist Team Lead will aid with staff supervision, meeting hospital workup and antigen order turnaround time expectations, customer service, staff training and competencies. The Team Lead will help ensure safe and accurate blood recommendations and products in accordance with AABB and FDA guidelines and per TBC policy. Good teamwork and customer service skills are required for this position.

Essential Functions

Reference Lab:

  • Performs sickle cell testing
  • Performs platelet crossmatching
  • Performs RBC crossmatching
  • Performs ABO/Rh on patients
  • Performs antigen typing
  • Performs quality control
  • Correlates laboratory test results with patient diagnosis and treatment
  • Teaches MLT students during clinical rotation
  • Performs antibody identification procedures
  • Fills blood orders
  • Maintains adequate inventory of rare frozen blood
  • Rotates on-call responsibilities

Laboratory Computer:

  • Uses the LIS to manage donor-testing information generated by automated testing equipment

Quarantining/Discarding Blood Components:

  • Identifies products that require quarantine or discard due to non-conforming test results and communicates information to the component lab

Equipment Care:

  • Performs calibration of equipment as needed
  • Performs maintenance procedures as indicated by equipment manufacturer’s recommendations

Review of Testing:

  • Reviews testing records such as Sickle Cell Testing, ABO Antibody Titers, Manual ABOs, Manual Hemantigen testing and Manual 3 cell tests
  • Reviews Quality Control testing such as Daily Temperatures, Daily antisera, Daily Rack QC, Daily PEG QC, etc.

Administrative Tasks:

  • Assists with supervising, coaching, and training assigned staff
  • Provides input regarding staff performance and evaluations
  • Directs workflow and assures communication between shifts
  • Assures completion of duties by staff members
  • Assists in procedure development and implementation
  • Assists in reviewing records
  • Assists in maintaining appropriate levels of supplies and materials needed
  • Provides competencies to staff
  • Assists in ensuring all records are correct and available for accreditation inspections
  • Assists in scanning of review records for long term storage

Miscellaneous:

  • Practices good customer service relations with co-workers, hospital customers, and the general public
  • Produces accurate, precise, and legible documentation
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area
  • Assists in the investigations and root cause analysis for any testing events
  • Other duties as assigned or required

Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology with two years experience in an IRL
    • MLS/BB strongly preferred
  • ASCP certification required
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload and meet deadlines
  • Ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, and courteously to patrons, donors, sponsors and co-workers

 

  • Ability to work with all levels and in a diverse work environment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, and peers
