Food Service Assistant



Position Classification: Non-exempt, full-time, benefits eligible



Accountable to: Program Director



Position Description:



Under general guidance of the food services coordinator, the food service assistant is responsible for the preparation and service of healthy meals for clients in a residential substance use treatment facility.

Food Service Assistant Primary Responsibilities:




  • Prepare and serve healthy and nutritious meals in accordance within federal, state, and county requirements

  • Follow all health codes pertaining to sanitation and safety, including but not limited to how to properly prepare food to avoid food-borne illnesses, cleanliness of work area and cooking utensils, and personal grooming

  • Assist with the inventory, stocking, and organization of the pantry, freezer and other food storage areas

  • Plan food production to coordinate with meal serving hours so that excellence, quality, temperature and appearance of food are preserved

  • Prepare meals in bulk while maintaining portion control without generating waste

  • Maintain required records, logs, and documentation

  • Work together with the food services coordinator to contribute to the creation of the weekly menu

  • Work fluidly as a team; supporting the food services coordinator with all planning, preparation and service



Food Service Assistant Qualifications:




  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required

  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and cook meals; one year of food service experience preferred

  • Must possess current food handler certification

  • Understanding and knowledge of safety, sanitation, and food handling procedures

  • Must maintain appropriate boundaries with clients and coworkers, and possess excellent ethical standards

  • Must exhibit professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, and reliability at-all-times

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive client information, per HIPAA and 42 CFR part 2

  • Must pass comprehensive background and reference check; driver license and clean driving record preferred





Physical Requirements






  • Climbing; ascending or descending stairs, ramps, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.

  • Kneeling; bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.




  • Crouching; bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

  • Reaching; extending hand (s) and arms above head in any direction.

  • Hearing; perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound.

  • Lifting; able to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects up to 30 pounds.

  • Visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures and viewing a computer terminal.
