Job Description

SUMMARY
The Assistant Lab Manager is a detail-oriented individual who supports daily lab operations. This person works directly with the lab manager(s), providing technical and administrative support, where appropriate. The assistant lab manager should have an in-depth understanding of daily operations and key performance metrics that drive the laboratory’s success. Additionally, he/she will help staff comply with all safety and compliance measures, assist with inventory, assist with training new staff and help manage equipment maintenance. Additional duties may be assigned by the lab manager based on need.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Work with the Lab Manager to ensure optimal operational processes and adherence to key performance metrics
2. Help enforce all laboratory safety and regulatory compliance requirements, including CLIA, OSHA, CAP, and other accrediting bodies
3. Assist with quality control, quality assurance, and continuous improvement initiatives
4. Assist in training and onboarding of new laboratory staff
5. Work directly with physician stakeholders to ensure technical products and services meet clinical needs.
6. Help oversee laboratory supply ordering, inventory management, and cost control
7. Coordinate staff scheduling, workflow, and project milestones with the Lab Manager and support staff
8. Assist in scheduling routine instrument maintenance and service activities
9. Support existing SOPs and assist in developing or updating SOPs as needed
10. Support inspection readiness, audits, and regulatory reviews
11. Lead laboratory operations in the Lab Manager’s absence
12. Perform other duties or special projects as assigned by management

EDUCATION REQUIRED
• High school diploma or equivalent – Required

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
• Minimum one year of experience in histopathology
• Previous management experience - Preferred

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
• Histotechnologist Certification – Preferred

LANGUAGE/COMMUNICATION REQUIREMENTS
• Ability to read and interpret work-related documents such as reports, communications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to respond to routine correspondence.
• Ability to listen, speak, and interact effectively with all customers and co-workers, adapting communication for optimal understanding.
• Excellent verbal communication skills required; ability to practice professional telephone etiquette and techniques on all calls.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, as required for the position.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to understand and follow instructions, both written and verbal. Ability to interpret data furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form and apply knowledge and understanding to effectively perform job duties.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a laboratory and administrative environment with exposure to typical laboratory conditions. The role requires strong communication skills, including frequent telephone and in-person interactions. The ability to work a flexible schedule is required to support operational needs, which may include extended hours, overtime, and emergency coverage.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work requires prolonged periods of sitting, with some standing and walking. Tasks require grasping, fine finger and hand dexterity, computer keyboarding and mouse usage, and repetitive hand, wrist, and shoulder motion. This position requires that the employee be able to push/pull, reach, bend, and kneel/crouch/squat. Lifting up to 10 pounds required, with occasional lifting up to 25 pounds. Work requires extensive reading, writing, and talking. Normal vision required, with or without corrective lenses. Normal hearing is required.
