JOB PURPOSE: To maintain the physical upkeep and cleanliness of school buildings, grounds,
and furnishings.
Duties, Responsibilities and Accountabilities
1. Keeps interior and exterior of buildings clean including, sidewalks, driveways, play
area, and grounds.
Daily
1. Clean entry glass
2. Clean litter around building and parking areas
3. Trash and recycle pick-up
4. Change kitchen and coffee station liners
5. Clean, disinfect restroom fixtures
6. Restock restroom supplies
7. Clean tables, counters, and sinks in break rooms
8. Clean and disinfect drinking fountains
Weekly
1. Low dusting below 5 feet
Monthly
1. High dusting above five feet
Annually
1. Clean ceiling vents
2. Clean and dust furniture
3. Clean window blinds
4. Clean fluorescent fixtures and diffusers
As Needed
1. Unplug drains
2. Deliver recycle and garbage barrels
3. Clean spills
4. Clean up any vandalism
1. Change trash liners
2. Shovels, and applies ice melt to walks and steps as needed.

3. Checks daily to insure that all exit doors are open and all panic bars are working
properly during the hours of building occupancy. Daily Unlock building
4. Assumes responsibility for pick up and delivery of both in and out of district mail.
5. Sweeps classroom daily and dusts and furniture.
6. Scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects restroom and locker room floors daily and cleans
all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily on a daily basis.
7. Cleans halls after school each day and during the day when their condition requires it.
8. Washes all windows on both inside and out at least once a year and more frequently if
necessary.
9. Keeps the grounds free of rubbish and performs such other tasks that are necessary to
maintain the school grounds in a clean and safe condition. Grounds are to be picked
up weekly or more frequently if necessary.
10. Keeps all floors clean.
Daily
1. Sweep, wet mop, disinfect restroom floors
2. Dust mop all hard surface floors
3. Vacuum entry mats and carpet in traffic areas
4. Sweep and clean loading dock area
5. Sweep and clean building entry
6. Vacuum traffic areas
7. Clean gym and multipurpose room
8. Cleans all white boards

1. Sweep and vacuum stairwells
2. Vacuum non-traffic areas
Monthly
1. Detail vacuum
2. Wet mop stairs

1. Extraction of all carpet areas
2. Wet scrub and wax floors

11. Makes minor building repairs.
As Needed
12. Reports needed repairs promptly to the Supervisor.
13. Reports immediately to the Supervisor any damage to school property or vandalism.
14. Remains on the school premises during school hours and during non-school hours
when the use of the building has been authorized and his attendance required by the
Supervisor.
15. Assumes the responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school
day and for determining before leaving that all doors and window are secured and all
lights, except those left on for safety reason, are turned off.
16. Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel on hand, and requisitions such
needed replacements for enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such
time as will not hinder the custodian in his duties.

17. Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and
as directed.
18. Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash,
rubbish, and waste.
19. Removes any signs of vandalism writing on walls, etc., as soon as it is discovered.
20. Performs other duties as assigned by Director of Maintenance or Principal.
Qualifications
1. Good physical condition.
2. Valid Alaska Driver’s License
3. Ability to live and work in a cross-cultural, rural Alaskan environment.
4. Ability to carry out successfully the duties described below.
5. Ability to follow directions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Requires decision-making ability and the ability to work independently. Requires ability
to plan, schedule, and prioritize work.
2. Requires computer software proficiency including: Microsoft Office and email
3. Requires interpersonal skills to courteously and effectively assist individuals. Requires

Education practices, Alaska State Laws, and Department of Education and Early
Development regulations.
Education and/or Experience: High School diploma or GED
Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as software operating and
training instructions, and technical procedure manuals. Ability to speak effectively before
supervisors and district employees. Ability to speak Yupik preferred.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as bank deposits and
purchase requisitions.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions
furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several
concrete variables in standardized situations.
Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to develop effective working relationships with the
principal, staff, students, parents, and community. Ability to communicate clearly and
concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district
requirements and Board of Education policies. Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.
