Elementary Physical Education Teacher




QUALIFICATIONS



  • Holds or is eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license with endorsement in Health and Physical Education (PreK–12).

  • Demonstrates the professional and interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with students, families, staff, and the broader community.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse learners and adapt instruction to meet varied needs.

  • Experience integrating inclusive practices for students with disabilities and English learners preferred.

  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may deem appropriate.

JOB GOAL


To promote lifelong physical activity, health, and wellness by developing each student’s understanding of physical fitness, movement, and healthy habits. The teacher will foster physical, social, and emotional growth while helping students develop skills in movement, teamwork, and personal responsibility appropriate to their developmental level.




PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES


Instruction & Student Learning



  • Plans and delivers standards-based instruction aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning for Health and Physical Education.

  • Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness, movement concepts, rhythms and dance, and individual and team activities.

  • Uses a variety of instructional strategies to engage students and support measurable student growth.

  • Differentiates instruction to meet the needs of all learners, including students with disabilities and diverse learning profiles.

  • Integrates social-emotional learning, teamwork, and sportsmanship into daily instruction.

  • Assesses and monitors student progress in physical skills, knowledge, and participation, using data to inform instruction.


Classroom & Environment Management



  • Establishes and maintains a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.

  • Teaches and reinforces appropriate behavior, cooperation, and responsible decision-making.

  • Ensures safety through proper supervision, equipment checks, and adherence to safety protocols.


Collaboration & Communication



  • Collaborates with colleagues to plan and implement a comprehensive physical education program.

  • Communicates effectively with families regarding student progress and wellness.

  • Works with school staff to support student needs related to health, behavior, and learning.


Program Responsibilities



  • Maintains inventory, equipment, and instructional materials.

  • Selects and requisitions appropriate equipment and supplies.

  • Supports school-wide initiatives, events, and wellness activities.

  • Participates in curriculum development and school improvement efforts.


Professional Responsibilities



  • Maintains professional competence through ongoing professional learning.

  • Participates in faculty meetings, committees, and school activities.

  • Supervises students during assigned duties and school-related activities.

  • Supports extracurricular opportunities (e.g., clubs, athletics) as appropriate.




PHYSICAL DEMANDS


The physical demands described are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made.



  • Requires standing, walking, running, bending, and demonstrating physical activities for extended periods.

  • Requires clear verbal communication and the ability to hear and respond to student needs.

  • Frequent use of hands for handling equipment and demonstrating skills.

  • Occasional lifting and/or moving of equipment up to approximately 25 pounds.

  • Visual ability to monitor student safety and engagement across large spaces.




WORK ENVIRONMENT



  • Work is performed in gymnasiums, outdoor fields, and other school environments.

  • Exposure to varying weather conditions when teaching outdoors.

  • Noise levels may vary depending on activity settings.




TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT



  • 200-day contract.

  • Salary and work year established by the School Board.




EVALUATION


Performance will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and the division’s teacher evaluation system.
