Position Summary
The Bass Lake Ranger District of the Sierra National Forest is seeking a strong candidate to assist in the Timber program with a wide variety of timber management activities. The SCA member will be trained by and work directly with our permanent Forest Service employees, gaining the opportunity to learn from their crew lead, foresters, and other vegetation management staff.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Vegetation Inventory
- Conducting basic measurements of tree diameters and heights using measurement tools associated with timber cruising
- Quantifying fuel loading and brush densities
- Laying out vegetation treatment projects including timber to be removed.
- Identifying need protection for wildlife and flagging the area on the ground.
Marginal Duties
- Successful completion of required training as needed
- Performing inventories, collecting data and producing reports as needed
- Marking cutting unit boundaries with tracer paint
- There will also be opportunity to work with Range Management, Wildlife Management and Recreation.
Required Qualifications
- Must have the ability to communicate effectively with both coworkers and members of the public.
- A personal vehicle to drive between the office and housing. All travel to work sites will be in a government vehicle
This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hiking, backpacking or other wilderness travel experience.
- Basic computer and office skills.
- Familiarity with the Bass Lake Ranger District
Hours
40 per week
Living Accommodations
Government housing is provided for non-local candidates.
Compensation
- Living allowance - $450/week
- Round Trip Travel Allowance- $1,100 (paid once)
- USFS Housing Provided on site
All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
