Job Description
Position: Marketing and Communications Sr. Manager
Organization: United Contractors (UCON)
Location: San Ramon, California
UnitedContractors.org

UCON is seeking a Marketing and Communications Senior Manager to help bring more structure, consistency, and IMPACT to how we reach and communicate with our members, potential members, and the broader industry. This is not a role for someone who wants to “manage the brand” from a distance. It is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can organize moving pieces, sharpen execution, support multiple departments, and help translate UCON’s value into clear, useful, timely communication that delivers impact and drives our brand influence across all levels. The right person will help UCON communicate more effectively across roles, regions, and member companies, especially as we work to deepen engagement and build stronger visibility across California.

About UCON
United Contractors is a powerful, high-impact trade association representing over 800 union-signatory construction and associated firms across California. We exist to empower, advocate for, and support California’s union contractors. We are relentlessly committed to serving the needs of our members—while building the next generation of industry leaders.

Our Vision: To be the most trusted and transformational construction organization in the nation.

UCON Values
Our values set us apart and fuel our work as individuals and as a team. We take them seriously. If you share these values, you’ll thrive here.

Authenticity: The courage to be unapologetically different, genuine and bold
Credibility: Unparalleled reliability, trust, and time-tested expertise
Compassion: Motivated by care, intention, and the desire to serve – we go beyond for our members
Integrity: Absolute accountability and transparent decision-making
Drive: We act with grit, urgency, and relentless determination

At UCON, we don’t do politics, egos, BS or bureaucracy.
If the values above feel like a description of who you are, and the mission feels motivating to you, you’ll fit right in and thrive at UCON and in this uniquely important role.

Why Work at UCON?
At UCON, your work has meaning—real, measurable, lasting impact. Our team culture is high-performing and high-trust. We invest in people who care deeply, move purposefully, and act boldly in service of others.

Here’s what you can expect:
• A smart, driven, and (mostly) humble team that respects and supports each other.
• A results-driven group of individuals, from top to bottom, that genuinely enjoy their work and each other. We have fun along the way!
• Leadership that’s accessible, human, and genuinely invested in your success.
• Mission-aligned, member-focused work that drives real-world change for our industry and our membership.
• Competitive salary and benefits, a hybrid work environment, and a commitment to professional growth.

Position Overview
This role exists to expand the internal marketing and communications function for UCON. UCON needs a leader who can create order across departments, improve coordination of communications, and help our team tell the UCON story with more confidence, creativity, and consistency.

This person will help UCON:
• Create and manage a centralized communications strategy
• Support consistent tone, messaging, and visual standards across teams
• Improve member-facing communication planning across departments
• Strengthen internal systems for content, campaigns, and outreach
• Coordinate with outside partners to carry the strategy into execution
• Strengthen member contact depth and role-based communications over time
• Support leadership visibility, program promotion, and member engagement

Key Responsibilities:

1. Lead internal marketing and communications coordination
• Build and manage UCON’s centralized communications calendar across departments
• Create structure for campaigns, email communications, program promotion, announcements, and member touchpoints
• Coordinate with internal teams so communications are timely, aligned, and not duplicative
• Help leadership prioritize what needs to be said, when, and to whom

2. Manage member communications and content execution
• Oversee day-to-day execution of email marketing, digital communications, social content planning, and member-facing messaging
• Work with internal staff and external partners to develop and deploy content that supports UCON’s priorities
• Ensure communications reflect different member needs across executives, project managers, HR, safety, field leadership, administrative staff, and emerging leaders.

3. Strengthen communication systems and internal usability
• Help implement practical templates, workflows, and standards so non-marketing staff can communicate consistently
• Build simple internal processes for project intake, message development, approvals, and production
• Improve continuity between departments including Engagement, Member Experience, Government Relations, Labor Relations, and Operations
• Support internal adoption of voice and tone guidance and brand tools

4. Support role-based and region-aware communications
• Help UCON move toward smarter segmentation by role, region, and member interest
• Partner with the appropriate internal and external teams to improve contact strategy and member outreach over time
• Support stronger Southern California visibility and relevance through localized communications, leadership visibility, and more balanced storytelling, an area repeatedly identified as a growth need.

5. Manage external partners and internal execution
• Serve as the day-to-day internal lead for marketing and communications coordination with agency and contract partners
• Translate strategy into internal action plans, deadlines, deliverables, and follow-through
• Help make sure external work is implemented, used, and sustained inside UCON

6. Support program and organizational visibility
• Support communications for leadership development, professional education, events, advocacy, and member engagement efforts
• Help elevate UCON’s strongest differentiators, including contractor-led governance, direct problem-solving, labor expertise, leadership development, and trusted peer access. Those are central to UCON’s positioning in the playbook and competitive analysis.
• Work with leadership to present progress and outcomes clearly to the board

Ideal Candidate Profile
You don’t need to come from the construction industry. But you do need to know how to operate in an environment where things move fast, and people expect results.

Required Qualifications
• 2-5 years of experience in marketing, communications, content strategy, member engagement, or related leadership roles
• Experience building or leading communications systems across multiple stakeholders or departments

• AI literacy and the ability to work with CoPilot, Claude, Adobe etc.
• Demonstrated skills in Social Media strategy and brand building
• Comfort working in a fast-moving, relationship-driven environment

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in successful associations, professional services, advocacy organizations, or member-based environments
• Experience working with executive leaders and boards
• Experience with role-based segmentation, member journeys, or audience-specific messaging
• Experience working with internal teams plus outside agencies or consultants
