POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Boston Energy Trading and Marketing – Trading Analyst

Title: Trading Analyst

Reports to: SVP, Energy Trading and Analytics

Purpose: Responsible for support of trading, pricing and valuation analytical efforts for the Energy Trading business

Location: Houston, TX, US

Boston Energy Trading and Marketing (BETM) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation, a global integrated business enterprise that develops and operates businesses across virtually every industry. Mitsubishi’s current activities have expanded far beyond its traditional trading operations to include investments and business management in industrial goods, retail, new energy, infrastructure, finance and new technology-related businesses.

Boston Energy Trading and Marketing provides asset management & optimization services to owners of generation and energy storage in North America, and wholesale energy to retail power & gas suppliers. Our proprietary traders cover competitive power markets including New England, Midwest and Western markets. BETM has been optimizing our customers’ generation assets for over 15 years. Our current organization has its roots in Citizens Power, dating back to 1989 when Citizens obtained the first FERC power marketing license and market-based-rate authorization. Mitsubishi’s Diamond Generating acquired BETM from NRG Energy in August 2018, and prior to 2014 BETM was known as Edison Mission Marketing and Trading. Mitsubishi provides BETM with investment-grade credit support for BETM’s commercial activities.

Role Summary:

Boston Energy Trading and Marketing (“BETM”) is seeking a Trading Analyst to join its Analytics team supporting pricing, valuation, risk, and trade development across North American energy markets. This role is well‑suited for analytically strong candidates with a genuine interest in trading and commercial decision‑making, who want to work closely with an active trading desk and deepen their understanding of how analytics inform risk decisions and returns. While the position does not involve immediate independent risk‑taking, BETM views it as a longer‑term development role, with opportunities for increased responsibility earned through sustained analytical impact, market insight, and demonstrated judgment over several years. The role reports to the Head of Energy Trading and Analytics and is based in Houston, TX.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance pricing, valuation, and risk models for power and natural gas products, including exchange traded, congestion instruments, load positions, storage, options, and other structured commodity transactions with a systematic analytical framework
  • Apply quantitative analysis, programming, and data analytics to identify, evaluate, and track trading opportunities, including development of performance measurement and reporting methodologies
  • Build and maintain fundamental supply and demand models for power and natural gas markets at both regional and macro levels, leveraging advanced forecasting techniques and the latest infrastructure intelligence
  • Support analysis across major North American RTO power markets including PJM, CAISO, NYISO, MISO, SPP, ISO‑NE, and ERCOT, as well as North American natural gas markets
  • Assist with daily trading activities, including PnL attribution, risk calculations, trade execution support, and settlement
  • Partner closely with IT and other stakeholders on analytical systems, data pipelines, and model enhancement initiatives supporting the Energy Trading business

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field required; graduate degree in Quantitative Finance, Econometrics, or a similar discipline preferred
  • Experience developing and maintaining quantitative models in Python using modern data structures, analytics, and visualization tools (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, scikit‑learn, and interactive visualization or dashboard frameworks in Python, such as Plotly or Streamlit) in production Windows and/or Linux environments
  • Working knowledge of modern database systems; experience in cloud‑based environments using DevOps tools such as Git, pipelines, and storage accounts, and familiarity with Microsoft Azure is a plus
  • Demonstrated intellectual curiosity about markets, strong problem‑solving instincts, and a desire to understand how analytical insights translate into trading decisions
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; confident, curious, and creative
  • Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous problem spaces, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced trading environment
  • Comfortable working in an open, collaborative office setting
  • One to three years of experience supporting a quantitative analytics environment in the financial sector is preferred; experience with energy commodities and power markets strongly preferred
