Position Title: Residential Registered Nurse    

Department: Residential

Reports to: Clinical Director

 

About the Program:

Residential (RES): also known as the Diermeier Therapeutic Youth Home in North Lawndale. The facility can serve 70 youth, most of whom come through DCFS, group homes, foster care and psychiatric hospitals. The around-the-clock facility is staffed by more than 150 employees who provide services to decrease problematic behaviors. The program provides life skills, tutoring, therapy, educational opportunities, programmatic activities, sporting and recreational events, camping, part-time employment opportunities, and arts and crafts, among other offerings. The goal at discharge is to have successfully engaged youth so they can transition to foster care or transitional living services. The accredited program is considered high end because of services and supports provided to youth with the most difficult behaviors. 

 

 

Position Objective and Summary:

The Registered Nurse addresses the medical needs of the students according to the students’ IEP, dispenses medication and addresses medical situations that occur during the school day.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Administers and supervises administration of medication.
  • Schedules and coordinates services to be provided within the school setting.
  • Keep accurate and complete records on students.
  • Trains staff and students on various health care topics.
  • Schedules days/times for immunizations, dental, vision and hearing exams to be provided at the Academy.
  • Recommends and helps to implement modification of school programs to meet students’ health needs.
  • Completes appropriate documentation in KAMPS to support the services provided along with completing the medication administration record.
  • Checks to ensure that the students have sufficient medication(s) in the school and contacts parents/doctors for refills.
  • Encourages parents to maintain current immunization protection as recommended by the Department of Human Services
  • Assesses students for any sign of injury after any physical intervention.
  • Maintains current knowledge through participation in training sessions and other related program meetings, on a regular basis.
  • Plans and implements school health management protocols for the child with chronic health problems, including the administration of medication.
  • Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases.
  • Engages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practices.
  • Is responsible for maintaining and updating cumulative health records.
  • Performs other related tasks as required or assigned.

  • Responds to clients and their families, UCAN staff, DCFS, service providers and other stakeholders in a timely manner and ensures follow up to adequately address their need.
  • Performs other related tasks as required or assigned

 

Education/Job Experience/Certification:

  • State of Illinois RN licensure.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Two (2) years’ experience in related work.
  • Some weekends

 

Special Knowledge and Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to work effectively with children.
  • Experience in Maternal and Psychiatric nursing.
  • Is open and respectful of cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of clients and is willing and competent to work with a diverse client population.
  • Has an understanding of trauma-informed practice
  • Has an understanding of Positive Youth Development.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of the child welfare system.
  • Ability to work both independently and a part of a high functioning team.
  • Experience and ability to use computers for data entry, communication and report writing
  • Car and valid Illinois driver’s license and insurance required.
