Job Description

Summary:

The Unconventional (TU) is seeking exceptionally qualified Bangladesh Interpreter / Cultural Advisor to support our Pacific Augmentation Team (PAT) Bangladesh (BGD) with foreign language interpretation, transcription, reporting, translation services, and expert cultural advice.

 

Specific duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Support PAT BGD engagements in Bangladesh.
  • Shall be readily available from 0700 – 1900, seven days per week. Interpreter/Advisor will be provided 72 hours’ advance notice of each engagement, and three (3) or more hours advance notice of the time and location for the first required services for each day.
  • Shall be available on-call from 1901 – 0659 seven days per week.
  • Advisor shall provide written and spoken translation as necessary during engagements.
  • Shall interact with civil society organizations, security forces, academia, Government of BGD officials, and others in a professional setting.
  • Interpreter/Advisor is expected to always look and act professionally and respectfully.
  • Shall provide Bangla special operations language and cultural familiarization to team members as requested.
  • Provide Bangla versions of engagement material that is usable by PAT BGD partners for presentation, discussion, and instruction.
  • Shall provide interpretation, transcription, and translation services as required by the supported elements.
  • Perform such other duties as are customarily performed by other persons in similar such positions, as well as such other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the employer.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Shall be an experienced and competent Bangla Interpreter/Cultural Advisor.
  • Shall have a minimum of three (3) years of documented experience working with U.S. SOF teams. Interpreter/Cultural Advisor should be certified by PAT BGD personnel.
  • Demonstrated expert ability to convey SOF-specific vernacular using the SOLT Bengali course material for verification.
  • Be familiar with Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet and capable to rapidly learn norms for other provinces and districts of BGD.
  • Shall speak English at a level that allows for proper communication between members of PAT BGD.
  • Shall have a minimum of three (3) years of documented experience working with the BGD Navy, BGD Army, BGD Coast Guard, and BGD Fire Service and Civil Defense. Preferably, the Interpreter/Advisor shall have worked more than four (4) different times over the course of two (2) years with the Para Commando Brigade (PCB) and Special Warfare Diving and Salvage (SWADS) between 2019 and present.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Prior military experience.
  • Prior familiarization with U.S. SOF military and medical vernacular.
  • Have experience and skill in Bengali and English translating/interpreting, transcribing and documenting conversation with.
  • Professional working proficiency in Bengali and English.
  • Have experience providing consecutive interpretation services between English and Bengali native speakers.
  • Possess skills to quickly and effectively translate between Bengali /English & English/ Bengali in a large group setting while discussing one or more topics.
  • Shall have the familiarity with and ability to conduct oneself in accordance with the local culture and customs.

 

Clearance:  Must pass a background investigation.

 

Location:  Dhaka, Bangladesh (Primary location); Chattogram, Bangladesh; and Sylhet, Bangladesh; or wherever services are needed.

 

Travel:  Must be able and ready to travel throughout Bangladesh. OCONUS travel may be required.
