- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Entry-level to mid-level experience in automotive or heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
- Certifications: Willingness to work toward ASE Certification.
- Licensing: Illinois bus driver permit and CDL license (or willingness and ability to obtain it within an agreed amount of time) with Passenger and School Bus endorsements.
- Maintain certification for the Illinois Online Class A/B/C Operator Course (for Dispensing Facility).
- Basic computer literacy for diagnostic software and digital record-keeping.
- Assist in performing preventative maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations, fluid checks) for all district vehicles.
- Perform minor mechanical repairs and assist the Lead Mechanic with complex engine, brake, and electrical system overhauls.
- Drive bus routes or shuttles as needed (requires appropriate licensing).
- Assist with emergency road repairs and vehicle recoveries.
- Maintain department equipment, tools, and facility in accordance with district and OSHA regulations to ensure a safe, clean work environment.
- Help track inventory, organize parts, and notify the Lead Mechanic when supplies or fluids are low.
Assist with the cleaning, clearing, and safe operation of the department fueling stations.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and learn complex mechanical systems.
- Strong collaborative skills to work effectively with the Lead Mechanic and Transportation team.
- Ability to problem-solve and troubleshoot mechanical issues under supervision.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods, reach, handle, lift, push, pull, and stoop.

Work Days: 260 days (8 hour days - typical schedule is from 6:30am-3:30pm)

JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for assisting in the maintenance and repair of the district's bus fleet to ensure the safe and reliable transportation of students. The Bus Technician works under the guidance of the Bus Mechanic to perform routine servicing and minor repairs.
