General Description:
The Volusia Sheriff�s Office Aviation Unit operates three (3) Bell 407 helicopters. On most missions, the Flight Paramedic/TFO sits beside the pilot operating the police radios and camera systems. On medical missions, the medic will move into the rear of the cabin to provide care to patients while in flight to the nearest trauma center. In a typical year, our Air One crews will provide lifesaving care to over 100 patients on medevac missions. In addition to general law enforcement duties, as well as medevac duties, Air One crews perform various search and rescue missions for the US Coast Guard, as well provide support in fighting wildfires.
Note: This posting is for a part-time, no benefits position with the requirement to work one (1) prescheduled 12-hour shift per month. Additional hours will be scheduled on an as-needed basis. Shifts for Air One are a 12-hour shift (0530-1730 or 1730-0530). This position could be to fill vacancies on both days and nights. Additional availability may be necessary during the initial training period.
Minimum Qualifications:
- State of Florida driver's license
- State of Florida Paramedic Certification or National Registry Paramedic Certification (LP/EMT-P/NREMT-P)
- Basic Life Support Certification
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification
- Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support
- Air Medical Crew Core Curriculum (Preferred but required after hired)
Background Screening: This position will require an extensive background investigation and drug screening.
Essential Functions:
- Responds to emergency calls that require air transport (e.g., in remote locations or from hospitals that are far apart).
- Assesses a patient�s condition at the scene and determines a course of treatment (e.g., administering medication, injections, advanced airway managements, and IVs).
- Gets the patient safely in the helicopter and transports them safely to a hospital.
- Reports on what treatment the patient has already received to emergency physicians, nurses, or other healthcare facility staff.
- Documents medical care given to patients.
- Tracks stock and replaces and cleans supplies and equipment after use.
- Operates tactical police radios, camera systems (FLIR), as well as recording and navigation equipment.
- Sets up perimeters for tactical aerial surveillance on law enforcement missions.
- Conducts public outreach with other departments.
- Gives passenger briefings and assists in the loading and unloading of passengers.
- Assists with safety and security in and around the aircraft while on the ground.
- Refuels the aircraft upon return to Aviation and �Hot Refueling� as missions dictate.
- Assists in the maintenance of cleanliness of the Aircraft and Hangar.
- Assists the Pilot as needed or requested.
- Provides medical assistance on specialty vehicles during certain events to include, but not limited to, High Water Vehicles and SWAT Bearcat, as needed.
- Additional duties as assigned by management to meet the needs of the Agency.
- Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
- Must adhere to Federal, State, County, and local ordinances.

Environmental Conditions:
- Most tasks are performed in flight where proper provisions are in place in terms of employee security and protection. Due to the nature of aerial operations, tasks include potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements consistent with inclement weather, high wind speeds, and equipment stress.
- Must be able to work a 12-hour shift on a 2-3-3 rotation (0530-1730), off every other weekend Friday-Sunday.
- Must be able to rotate between dayshift and nightshift every 4 months.
- Must be able to work under stressful conditions.
- Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
- Must be able to remain available to work when a public emergency or disaster occurs.
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other medical personnel, victims, and family.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to Read, write, and communicate professionally and effectively with employees and managers.
- Ability to write simple correspondence or other reports.
- Ability to interact effectively with others.
Required Knowledge:
- VSO General Orders, procedures, and safety policies.
- Methods and techniques for providing on-site emergency medical services.
- Federal, State, County, and local laws and ordinances.
Physical Requirements:
- Manual dexterity.
- Intermittent performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
