Job Description

Position Summary

The Engineering Technician 1 performs engineering calculations and analysis for various technical components associated with utility distribution. The role is pivotal in establishing material specifications and developing functional specifications for construction units. The individual conducts field validations, provides technical support on complex projects, and incorporates documentation into CoServ's manuals and guidelines. This role actively communicates with internal and external project stakeholders to ensure collaboration across multiple departments. This role will address limited scope issues, following standard practices and procedures to analyze situations or data for readily obtainable answers. The individual receives general instruction on both ongoing work and new assignments, with periodic review based on defined procedures or precedence.

Primary Position Responsibilities 

  • Establishes material specifications and prepares cut sheets for the development of CoServ construction units.
  • Develops functional specifications for utilization in material selection.
  • Reviews new material for applications and utilization on CoServ’s utility systems.
  • Conduct field validation with the assistance of Operations personnel for the application of material and development of CoServ’s standards.
  • Assist with providing technical and field support related to material on complex projects.
  • Incorporates information and documentation into CoServ documents including Standards manual, Electric Service Policy, and Distribution Reference Guidelines.
  • Acts as point of contact for Standards revision requests.
  • Applies broad experience and comprehensive technical knowledge of utility distribution systems to solve new or obscure problems relating to technical, regulatory, and procedural matters.
  • Works directly to support the objectives of the Standards department by focusing on internal and external stakeholder communication and timely resolution of outstanding projects.
  • Performs engineering calculations to analyze equipment utilization opportunities and to prepare design and operation best practices documentation for other departments’ reference.
  • Assists in maintenance of CoServ’s Standards manuals, material specifications, reference documents, and construction unit database.
  • Reviews and investigates stakeholder concerns and recommends corrective measures as necessary.
  • Requests, performs, or directs the testing of materials and interprets results to ensure compliance with project specifications; prepares written reports and recommends alternatives.
  • Assures that adequate departmental activities records are maintained, and that appropriate periodic and special reports are prepared and distributed.
  • Prepares and reviews engineering plans, reports, studies, and related documents to make equipment recommendations.
  • Prepares scopes, cost estimates, specifications, special provisions, and related documents for assigned projects.
  • Research existing technical data which is pertinent for equipment evaluation and utilization.
  • Develops and monitors production and project schedule.
  • Generates technical detailed drawings as necessary to communicate with stakeholders.
  • Complies with established CoServ safety and operating rules, procedures and guidelines including reporting unsafe practices to a supervisor.
  • Complies with established CoServ Information Security Handbook, policies, procedures, and guidelines including reporting suspected information security incidents to Tech Support.

Secondary Position Responsibilities

  • Attends conferences and workshops as directed.
  • Represents Standards in meetings and on committees as directed.
  • Represents CoServ in a professional manner.
  • Follows internal company procedures for forwarding records, documents and information to other departments and personnel.
  • Receives training in CPR and first aid.
  • Wears safety clothing and equipment such as hardhat, goggles, steel-toed shoes, etc. when at construction site, or other field locations as appropriate.
  • Takes on additional duties and tasks, on a temporary or permanent basis, as needed to support and/or assist other departments and/or to realize organizational efficiencies.
  • Follows safe work practices, including the proper use of equipment, vehicles, tools, and job procedures, while always applying CoServ safety rules and procedures.
  • Follows safe work practices by documenting and reporting deficiencies with equipment and procedures and taking corrective action to remedy those deficiencies.
  • Follows safe work practices by attending Safety Meetings to stay abreast of CoServ’s current safety practices and procedures.
  • Attends CoServ University required training
  • Performs other duties and activities as directed.

Position Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D equivalency.
  • Associate’s degree or equivalent with a focus in Engineering, Geography, or Business OR 2 years of work experience.

Education, Experience, and Certifications Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Geography, or Business OR 4 years equivalent work experience.

Skills and Abilities Required

  • Must have strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Must have ability to work independently and in teams with minimal supervision.
  • Must have ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects/tasks.
  • Must have ability to work under strict deadlines and have a high level of problem-solving skills.
  • Must have an advanced knowledge of CoServ’s overhead and underground design standards.
  • Must have an advanced knowledge of CoServ’s Designer/Work Management systems.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook with an ability to learn additional software packages.
  • Must have an advanced understanding of CoServ’s Tariff for Electric Service including CoServ’s Line Extension Policy.
  • Must have an advanced understanding of NESC, NEC and OSHA requirements.
  • Knowledge in opening energized equipment for engineering purposes.
  • Ability to follow rules in employee handbook.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be self-motivated, take ownership of job responsibilities, and be proactive in seeking solutions.
  • Able to work both in a team and independently when required.
  • Comfortable with working repetitive processes.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong investigative and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, etc.).

Physical Requirements

  • Works both in the office and outdoors.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.
  • Drives company vehicle as needed.
  • Operates office equipment such as a computer, telephone, fax machine, copier, etc.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Works in potentially hazardous conditions caused by pets and wildlife in or near the work site.
  • Works in areas with possible exposure to poison oak, poison ivy, and insect stings.
