Lab Technician is responsible for drawing blood from patients to be sent to outside Laboratories as per Medical Staff orders; ensures compliance with the NYSDOH CLEP (Clinical Laboratory Evaluation Program). Supports the Hospital's mission to provide the highest quality care by complying with regulatory guidelines, meeting agency standards, and obtaining appropriate certification.
JOB DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Ensures proper patient identification while performing venipuncture on patients as per Medical Staff orders.
2. Deciphers the best method for drawing blood dependent upon the specific patient to minimize discomfort.
3. Assembles medical equipment/supplies (needles, test tubes, blood vials) to be used with specific patient.
4. Collects, labels, centrifuges, and properly stores patient specimens for pick-up.
5. Processes specimens via the electronic medical record to be sent to outside Laboratories.
6. Maintains all standards of data collection and analysis of Quality Control as required by NYSDOH-CLEP and other regulatory agencies.
7. Ensures that waste containing sharps, blood and other personal protective materials are disposed of properly.
8. Answers patient/caregiver questions as they related to collection of specimen(s).
9. Performs other duties as requested or directed by supervisor.
