Description:

The job of the Special Education Teacher - Student Support is done for the purpose of facilitating special education services to students with disabilities. The position facilitates student success in academics, social emotional skills, and activities of daily living through the implementation of district approved curriculum. Other responsibilities include; documenting student progress with formative and summative assessments, and progressing monitoring of the Individual Education Plan, and co-teaching an ELA class. Based on the student population, this position may require a high level of oversight in the areas of safety and medical protocols developed by the school nurse or outside medical services. 


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Washington State Teacher Certification with Special Education endorsement
  • Master’s Degree in Education preferred but not required
  • Highly Qualified Status in appropriate area as defined by No Child Left Behind and Washington State requirements
  • Successful teaching experience, includes  student teaching
  • Knowledge of subject matter in classroom instruction
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint clearance

Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities:

  • Adapts lesson/s for the purpose of implementing the IEP goals and meeting the special needs of students.
  • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher’s expectations, developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
  • Assesses student’s social needs (e.g. behavioral, motor development, communications, etc.) and academic needs (e.g. developmental level, vocational abilities, etc.) for the purpose of evaluating students and family requirements, placement and success of the program.
  • Collaborates with school personnel, agencies and community agencies (e.g. social service agencies, caretakers, etc.) for the purpose of developing and modifying the program to maximize the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions and planning curriculum.
  • Directs instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students.
  • Instructs students with individualized special needs for the purpose of developing appropriate academic, interpersonal and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
  • Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and an optimal learning environment.
  • Prepares teaching materials and reports (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and providing documentation of teacher and student progress.
  • Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, district and/or school policies.
  • Collaborates with general education ELA teacher to co-teach language arts class.

Additional Consideration given to candidates with the following documented skills:

  • Endorsement in English Language Arts
  • Prior experience working with students with autism and medically fragile
  • Prior experience working with students with  social emotional needs
  • Assistive technology knowledge
  • Training in curriculums for students with significant disabilities

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

  • Employees must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Physical ability to lift 25 pounds to shoulder height.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to effectively manage student transition to a variety of locations (e.g. P.E., recess, buses and lunch) throughout the day.
