PHYSICAL EDUCATION/HEALTH TEACHER

HIGH SCHOOL


POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for creating a health and physical education program appropriate for maturity, interest and ability of students.  Employs a variety of instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet different learning styles and interests of the student.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:   

  • This position requires a Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in physical education or a related area.
  • This position requires a minimum of one to three years of related health and physical education teaching experience in a classroom/gym setting.

                                   

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluates health and physical instructional programs to ensure student achievement and successful execution.
  • Guides students through the learning process toward maximum achievement based on established curriculum goals.
  • Establishes clear objectives for students to learn and progress; keeps class preparation materials available and ready for review by immediate supervisor.
  • Assesses the accomplishment of students on a regular basis, provides progress reports, and communicates with parents.
  • Develops a code of conduct for physical education which is consistent with established administrative policies and procedures and enforces conduct in a fair and equal manner.  
  • Ensures safety of students by providing a comprehensive program in safety instruction, injury prevention and physical conditioning.
  • Maintains a positive working relationship with parents and act as a problem solver when concerns arise.   Addresses behavioral issues until resolved in a satisfactory manner.
  • Develops an atmosphere of trust, respect, interest and enthusiasm with students to enhance learning opportunities.
  • Keeps abreast of new technologies and innovative techniques in the physical education field to ensure school is up to date and keeps relevant.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and teaching strategies to ensure learning based on different student aptitudes.
  • Ensures classroom/gym  is organized, attractive, safe and healthy and materials/equipment are in good condition.
  • Participates in in-service education and staff development and attends staff related functions as required.
  • Attends teacher conferences and other night activities customarily attended by classroom teachers.
  • Keeps abreast of new teaching techniques and continues in professional development activities to improve classroom outcomes.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by principal.

 REQUIRED:              

  •  Knowledge of school policies and procedures.
  • Ability to perform complex and technical tasks.
  • Ability to function in a fast paced environment.
  • Knowledge of effective instructional strategies for students with varied abilities.
  • Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, policies, rules and regulations as it relates to physical education programs.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills to effectively deal with parents and students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Flexibility regarding teaching assignments in multiple buildings.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, OR REGISTRATIONS:  Michigan Teaching Certificate required.  Must be CPR and First Aid Certified.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position has no supervisory responsibilities. May give direction to student teachers and student aids.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit or stand for long periods of time and occasionally must manually move, lift, carry, pull or push heavy objects or materials. There is occasional stooping, bending and reaching. Close vision is required to perform computer related tasks. Requires both indoor and outdoor physical activity year round.
