CARE is a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty. We place special focus on working alongside poor women because, equipped with the proper resources, women have the power to help whole families and entire communities escape poverty. CARE’s flagship program on Sexual and Reproductive Health in Emergencies (SRH-E), SAFPAC Initiative, aims to reduce women’s unintended pregnancies and deaths from unsafe abortion in acute emergencies and chronically crisis-affected countries. In line with CAREs commitment to reach 100 million women by 2020 and empower them to exercise their sexual and reproductive health rights, the SAFPAC global team started in 2016 to support three strategic CARE country offices (Chad, DRC and Mali) to conduct a landscaping study on existing policies and legal framework related to sexual and reproductive health including opening dialogue with local stakeholders on the consequences of unsafe abortions. This work galvanized local civil society organizations and convened for the first time ever communities to talk about unsafe abortion and to take actions to prevent them or ensure access to those in need. While the experience is similar in the three countries there are some specifics that require documentation and sharing to inform future project development.
The purpose of the internship will be to support the documentation and analysis of the country-specific approach developed and implemented to open dialogue on unsafe abortion, identify key actors, their roles and how they were selected, and identify bottlenecks and lessons learned to inform future programming especially in crisis affected and low resource settings.
