At bp, safety, reliability and operational discipline are at the heart of how we run our terminals.
We are looking for a Gantry Operator to support the safe and efficient loading of petroleum products at our Cape Town Terminal. In this role, you will coordinate, monitor and control bulk vehicle loading activities within the terminal yard and loading gantry.
You will make sure that trucks, drivers, Bulk Vehicle Operators and gantry systems are ready, safe and compliant before loading takes place. You will also help ensure that all product movements are properly controlled, recorded and managed in line with bp’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment standards, Terminal Operating Manual, and relevant Storage and Handling procedures.
This is a hands-on operational role where you will need to be confident in applying procedures, identifying risks, reporting issues and taking action when safety or compliance standards are not met.
What you will deliver
Safe gantry and yard operations
You will help ensure that all activities in the gantry and yard are carried out safely and in line with bp procedures. This includes:
Ensuring only authorised, inducted and competent operators are allowed to use the loading gantry.
Checking that trucks and Bulk Vehicle Operators are safe, ready and compliant before loading.
Making sure PPE requirements are followed at all times.
Ensuring safety signage, authorised walkways, reversing procedures and traffic flow rules are observed.
Making sure trucks are parked only in designated areas.
Addressing unsafe behaviour or non-compliance immediately.
Denying access to the yard or gantry where drivers or operators do not meet safety requirements.
Gantry equipment and system readiness
You will support reliable gantry operations by making sure loading equipment and systems are ready for use. This includes:
Monitoring gantry functionality and helping ensure the gantry remains operational.
Reporting daily on gantry uptime, issues, actions taken and support response times.
Monitoring the automated gantry control system.
Reporting defects, system failures or maintenance needs in a timely manner.
Following up on outstanding maintenance actions.
Managing gantry alarms and ensuring slops levels are controlled.
Maintaining strong housekeeping standards across the gantry and yard areas.
Loading control and product movement
You will control the loading process to ensure every product movement through the gantry is safe, accurate and properly recorded. This includes:
Checking loading instructions before loading starts.
Ensuring loading data is captured accurately.
Confirming trucks are empty before loading, or ensuring any remaining product is correctly reflected on the Bill of Lading.
Ensuring all product movements through the gantry are accounted for.
Applying additional controls when there are system, gantry or meter failures.
Ensuring a fair, orderly and consistent loading process for all users.
Preparing and submitting daily, weekly and monthly gantry reports.
Compiling fuel consumption reports and supporting corrective actions where required.
HSSE, incident reporting and process safety
You will play an important role in maintaining bp’s safety and process discipline standards. This includes:
Following bp’s HSSE policies, standards and procedures.
Applying the relevant Terminal Operating Manual requirements.
Following Storage and Handling Task Procedures related to receiving, storing and dispatching bulk fuel and additives.
Supporting product quality and maintenance processes.
Reporting all gantry, yard, vehicle, spill, injury, loading or product-related incidents promptly.
Supporting investigations into gantry-related incidents.
Conducting daily walks, inspections and task observations.
Taking corrective action where gaps or unsafe conditions are identified.
Driver and operator supervision
You will support safe and compliant behaviour from all users of the gantry. This includes:
Making sure gantry users are confident and compliant during loading.
Supporting the induction of new drivers before they are allowed to load.
Ensuring new drivers load under supervision until they are competent.
Supervising Bulk Vehicle Operators during gantry and yard activities.
Conducting and recording task observations on critical activities.
Checking the daily fitness and readiness of drivers operating in the gantry and yard area.
Communicating clearly with bp and non-bp personnel who use the terminal.
What you will need to be successful
We are looking for someone who can work safely, follow procedures and confidently manage activity in a busy terminal environment.
You will bring:
Matric qualification.
Experience in an operational environment such as terminal operations, refinery operations, logistics, transport, manufacturing, warehousing, fuel distribution or a similar environment.
Strong understanding of safe working practices.
Good attention to detail and ability to identify risks, defects or non-compliance.
Confidence to enforce HSSE standards with both bp and non-bp personnel.
Good interpersonal and communication skills.
Leadership skills to guide drivers, contractors and gantry users.
Computer literacy and ability to work with operational systems and reports.
Ability to follow procedures and maintain accurate records.
English language proficiency.
Willingness to work shifts, weekends and public holidays when required.
A tertiary or technical qualification would be advantageous.
Additional information
This role is based at the Cape Town Terminal and is fully onsite.
The successful candidate will be required to work in a safety-critical environment and must be comfortable working closely with trucks, drivers, gantry systems and petroleum product loading operations.
