JOB DESCRIPTION
Title: Mechanic
Department: Transportation
Immediate Supervisor: Supervisor of Mechanical Operations
Work Schedule: 260 day (8 hours per day)
Summary:
The Quincy Public School District has variety of vehicles & equipment such as buses,
cars, trucks, vans, mowers, tractors, saws, snowplows & rotary snow brushes & other
equipment which requires regularly scheduled maintenance & periodical repair. The
need for this type of equipment is important to the overall maintenance & operation for
the Quincy Public School District.
The employee assigned this function is charged with the responsibility to ensure that each
maintenance function and repair is professionally performed. When equipment is placed
out of service it is important that the equipment is repaired in a timely manner & is
returned in proper working order.
Duties and responsibilities:
1. Perform repair work on buses, cars, trucks & small engines / equipment that
include engines, transmissions, differentials, brakes, wheels, electrical systems,
radio systems, cooling systems, steering mechanisms, and suspension systems.
2. Conduct proper and thorough brake, tire, and wheel bearing inspections. Also
perform PM maintenance, oil changes & service work as required.
3. Perform body repair and part replacement.
4. Perform diagnostic testing on fuel injected, carburetor and diesel engines. Also
have the ability to use laptop & scan tools as required
5. Perform tire work such as mounting & dismounting tires of all sizes from mower
tires to bus tires. Also, ability to repair tires & use wheel balancer
6. Possess ability to weld, use cutting torch, & perform metal fabrication as needed.
7. Report to the Supervisor of Mechanical Operations any damage or condition
which may inhibit the performance of any equipment.
8. Be watchful for any mechanical problems that could result in any unsafe
condition.
9. Complete Assignments that are assigned by the Supervisor of Mechanical
Operations or his designee in a safe & timely manner
10. Request assistance from Supervisor of Mechanical Operations or fellow
mechanics whenever a repair or like condition exists that you have not been
adequately trained to perform or in a situation where for any reason you do not
feel that you can professionally complete the repair.
11. Provide assistance to other mechanics when required.
12. Be familiar with safety procedures and emergency equipment.

13. Assist any school district staff member with their requests as possible, within the
guidelines set forth for the transportation operation.
14. Be watchful for and promptly report defects in any tools or other unsafe
equipment. Report any such observations to the Supervisor of Mechanical
Operations.
15. Complete all required reports and shop forms in a timely manner.
16. Assist with maintenance of all snow removal equipment.
17. Obtain and renew a Safety Lane Inspector Classification pursuant to
requirements of the State of Illinois and perform state inspections as needed.
18. Obtain a CDL license and sub daily as needed.
19. Perform specialized assignments as may be assigned by the Supervisor of
Mechanical Operations, his supervisors, or his designee.
20. Perform Sunday bus checks on a rotation schedule.
21. Be available for overtime as needed / requested
22. Responsible for the control of all purchases pertaining to vehicles & equipment.
23. Request assistance from the Supervisor of Mechanical Operations with any
situation that may not be fully understood or may be beyond your training or
expertise.
24. Attend training sessions and departmental meetings as may be required.
25. Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor while interacting with the
members of the Quincy Public School District and/or the general public.
26. Ensure that shop uniform is worn at all times while on the job. Exceptions may
be granted by the Supervisor of Mechanical Operations during adverse weather.
Shop uniforms are to be changed out daily.
27. Provide assistance in keeping the Transportation Facilities (Bus Barn and Flinn
Fueling Station) in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
28. Perform routine, daily assignments that include fueling, parking, clean-up, and
under-the-hood inspections of school buses.
29. Establish and maintain professional rapport with all other members of the
Quincy Public School District.
30. Report any circumstances which may present a safety hazard and take
appropriate measures to reduce or remove such hazard.
31. Respond professionally to all verbal and written orders issued by superiors and
to work all assignments transmitted to him by authorized persons.
32. Operate all shop equipment and motor vehicles under the control of the Quincy
District in a safe and proper manner.
33. Ensure that all tools, shop equipment, parts, and supplies are properly stored.
34. Use safety gear / equipment when asked or as needed
35. Maintain a positive attitude & work with others as a team player.
Nothing in this section shall be construed as limiting the authority of the Supervisor
of Mechanical Operations or his superiors from assigning such functions or
responsibilities as are necessary to establish and maintain maximum efficiency and
effectiveness of the Transportation Department.
