ROLE of the POSITION
The Visiting Assistant Professor in Literacy Education with an emphasis in early and elementary literacy will serve the university’s, college’s, and department’s Tier 1 priorities to: increase external dollars generated for research; increase number of doctoral student graduates; increase external development dollars generated; increase scholarly productivity; and dramatically increase the production of highly qualified new teachers, especially Teachers of Color. Accordingly, the Visiting Assistant Professor in Elementary Literacy Education will: teach undergraduate and graduate (Master’s and Doctoral level) courses in Literacy Education with emphases in early and elementary literacy education, literacy assessment, foundations and research in literacy, and build and maintain a Literacy-related research and scholarship profile that includes external funding solicitation; actively, and in a highly collegial fashion, engage in service/extracurricular life on and off campus, including as a member/leader in relevant activities, initiatives, organizations; avidly collaborate in the administrative coordination of the Literacy Education emphasis/concentration/courses at all academic levels, and in advancing the mission/goals of the College of Education’s “diversity-related” centers and institutes. This position is a temporary one-year non-tenure-track appointment beginning fall semester 2021; based on institutional funding and performance in the position, this position could be renewed for additional years.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications:
- A doctoral degree (Ed.D. or Ph.D. or equivalent) in Literacy Education, and/or a closely related discipline from a regionally accredited college or university;
- Academic preparation and higher education teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the disciplines of literacy education;
- Minimum of 3 years of K-12 public schools, preferably in public urban schools and/or with learners from culturally and linguistically diverse populations;
- Demonstrated ability to work with socio-culturally diverse populations and prepare culturally responsive teachers;
- Excellent oral and written communications skills in English, and related high-level administrative skills, including careful attention to detail;
- An emerging record of leadership on-campus at department, college, and university-wide levels, as well as off-campus at local, state, regional, national, and international levels in relevant activities, initiatives, and organizations; and,
- A highly collaborative collegial disposition characterized by a willingness to be fully present with students, as well as faculty.
Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment.
The following additional candidate attributes are highly desirable, but not required:
- An emerging record of research, publication, and related scholarly achievement, including external funding activity, and demonstrated prowess with qualitative and critical research methodologies;
- Extensive university teaching experience, including at the graduate level;
- Knowledge of critical literacy, literacy/reading development, secondary English language arts instruction and methods, writing instruction;
- Familiarity of ILA/NCATE/CAEP/CCSS standards;
- Knowledge and experience working with first generation, low-income diverse and multicultural populations.
SALARY RANGE
Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. Position is contingent upon funding.
