Job Description

Reports to: Campus Principal and Assigned Teacher(s)   


Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt


Pay Family: Clerical/Paraprofessional  


Pay Grade: 03


Minimum Hourly Salary: $17.40


Duty Days: 187 days per year


 


Primary Purpose:


Provides instructional support services under the teacher’s direct supervision; assists the teacher in the instruction of reading, writing and math, preparation, and management of classroom activities.


 


Qualifications:


Education



  • High school diploma or equivalent and ability to pass a rigorous content-oriented exam


or



  • Associate degree or 48 semester hours of college credit


 


Certification



  • Current Texas educational aide certificate or ability to obtain 


 


Experience



  • Some experience working with children


 


Special Knowledge and Skills                                                               



  • Ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics

  • Ability to work well with children

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in Sign Language

  • Ability to exercise good judgment in handling confidential information

  • Beginning Sign Language skills, minimum


 


Major Responsibilities and Duties:


Instructional Support



  • Provides direct instruction of students under direct supervision of the teacher.

  • Conducts instructional exercises assigned by the teacher; works with individual students or small groups.

  • Assists in classroom management.

  • Conducts parent involvement activities.

  • Assists teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.

  • Assists with administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.

  • Helps maintain a neat and orderly classroom.

  • Helps with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.

  • Helps teachers keep administrative records and prepare required reports.

  • Provides orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.

  • Other SHARS duties as assigned by the department.

  • Provides Personal Care as identified in applicable student IEPs.


 


Student Management



  • Helps supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.

  • Keeps teachers informed of special needs or problems of individual students.


 


Other Related Duties:



  • Follows district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

  • Participates in professional development, department meetings, and special events as assigned.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


 


Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:


Tools and Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; hearing aids, assisted listening devices


Posture: Moderate standing; occasional kneeling, squatting, bending, and stooping


Motion: Repetitive hand motions; moderate walking


Lifting: Frequent light lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying (less than 15 pounds)


Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise; may require occasional district-wide and statewide travel


Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
