Overview
NOTE: This is an adjunct instructional position. Course assignments are made on a semester-by-semester basis and are contingent upon departmental needs, student enrollment, and scheduling availability. As such, hours are not guaranteed, and teaching opportunities may not be available immediately upon hire.
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Associate Dean of Economic Development, this instructor will deliver Truck Driver Program courses that prepare new students to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Responsibilities include teaching assigned courses through lecture, lab, comprehensive hands‑on demonstrations, cooperative learning, and other instructional methods at on‑campus or off‑campus outreach locations. This position provides instruction over-the-road and on a controlled driving range, ensuring students gain practical experience in vehicle operation, maneuvering, and safety procedures. Instruction also includes guiding students through required pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections, range maneuvers, and on‑road driving competencies.
Provide an exceptional customer service experience to both internal and external customers throughout every interaction.

Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Other duties may be assigned):
(100%) Instruction
- Deliver classroom, range, and over‑the‑road instruction that prepares students for CDL licensure.
- Train students in required pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections following industry and regulatory standards.
- Provide hands‑on demonstrations of vehicle operation, safety procedures, and maneuvering techniques.
- Evaluate student performance through observation, skills assessments, and documented progress checks.
- Maintain a safe learning environment on the driving range, in the classroom, and during road training.
- Ensure all instructional activities comply with Department of Transportation requirements and program policies.
- Complete and maintain accurate records, attendance, training logs, and other required documentation.
- Communicate effectively with students to support learning, skill development, and professional conduct.
- Maintain all required professional licensures and certifications necessary for CDL instruction and vehicle operation.
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Technical school diploma in Truck Driving or related field OR
- High School diploma and successful completion of Truck Driver Train-the-Trainer course offered through WTCS (or equivalent school with proof of transcript). This course must be completed by the end of the first year of teaching.
- Must possess and maintain a good driving record with DOT/DMV & CSA (Compliance Safety & Accountability).
- Must have a minimum of seven years (14,000 hours) of experience as a Truck driver.
- In addition, one of the following must be met:
- At least two years of driving experience must have occurred within the last five years.
- Two years of teaching Truck driving coursework at the post-secondary level within the last five years.
All instructors are required to meet and maintain Higher Learning Commission (HLC) requirements, Faculty Quality Assurance Standards (FQAS), and/or other job-specific licensing standards.
Per the subject area taught, instructors are required to possess the appropriate credentials.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSURE, REGISTRATION:
- Current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- In addition, instructors must NOT have any of the following restrictions on their Class A CDL:
- L (No full air brakes) - usually due to not passing the air brake test or testing in a vehicle without full air brakes
- Z (No full air brakes) – similar to L, but applies to partial or hydraulic brake systems
- O (No fifth-wheel connection) - means they tested in a vehicle without a fifth wheel, so they can’t operate one
- Current driving record within acceptable standards of DOT (Department of Transportation) and Wisconsin DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) standards.

CONDITION(S) OF EMPLOYMENT:
• Employment is conditional on completion of a Background Information Disclosure (BID) with the results acceptable to the college.
• Must meet and maintain Faculty Quality Assurance System (FQAS) requirements within 5 years of employment.
