About the Department
The Grounds Assistant is responsible for assisting Maintenance Technicians with the maintenance of all county grounds and facilities. Following the instruction of Maintenance Technicians, the Grounds Assistant will install plants, maintain yards and other objects (example: rock, cement, lighting, furniture, water, etc.) in external environments through irrigation, trimming, pruning, raking, mulching, application of pesticides and fertilizers, as well as other methods.
Position Duties
- Perform grounds keeping and building maintenance duties.
- Cut law using hand, power, or riding mower; trim and edge around walks, flower beds, and walls.
- Landscape by planting flowers, grass, shrubs, and bushes.
- Sweep walkway of debris.
- Cut down tree limbs that are posing a danger.
- Trim shrubs and pull weeds.
- Rake, mulch and prune the grounds as needed.
- Water plants and grass as needed and apply fertilizer.
- Apply pesticide to rid grounds of pests such as mosquitos, wasps, ticks and others.
- Maintain vehicle, tools, equipment, and materials in an orderly and safe condition.
- Perform minor repairs and maintenance procedures on equipment utilized in grounds keeping.
- Assist with the relocation and transport of furniture, file cabinets, and other supplies as needed.
- Supervise work release personnel.
- Adhere to all safety policies and procedures.
- Follow all applicable fiscal county policies concerning: attendance, documentation of work, dress and personal appearance, hazard and alarms, confidentiality, licensing and regulation.
- Complete other duties as may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: General knowledge of grounds maintenance and equipment operation. Ability to organize and prioritize tasks to be assigned and completed. Understand and follow instructions. Perform mathematical calculations. Must be 16 years of age with a Valid Texas Driver’s License. Must be able to pass a Physical, Drug Screen, and Extensive Background Check.
PHYSCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employee is regularly required to sit and stand for extended periods of time; use hands to finger motion, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employees must frequently bend, stoop, lie down, and walk. The employees must frequently lift and/or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, peripheral vision, ability to focus, and perceive color. Vision may be corrected with corrective lenses. Ability to work in areas of loud noise and tolerate extreme outdoor weather conditions.
