Job Description

Although not fully comprehensive, the list below gives a general description of the basic tasks a teacher’s aide normally will be required to perform and will be evaluated upon. Staff serve as a role model to students. In addition, it is expected that the aide will comply with all applicable school policies, guidelines, and code of conduct expectations outlined in the Employee Handbook. Aides are vital to our academic program in many ways!  Basic tasks and skills include the following, depending on grade level:



 



Classroom Assistance:




  • Assist the classroom teacher with any task he/she deems necessary to create a productive classroom environment.  This includes but is not limited to student monitoring, copying, filing, assisting with group work, or other duties.

  • Assist classroom teacher each morning to prepare the classroom to receive students for the day.

  • All correspondence/discussions with parents should be approved by the classroom teacher before being sent.  Only teachers should discuss negative student behavior with parents.

  • Assist in the set-up, maintenance and clean-up of the classroom throughout the day.

  • Substitute for the teacher when he/she is absent, a substitute will be called for the aide position for that day.

  • Monitor students during dismissal or fulfill any other dismissal role as assigned.



 



Student Assistance:




  • Assist the teacher in upholding the rules/policies/protocol of the school.

  • Work with small groups throughout the day according to the plans of the teacher.

  • Let the teacher guide and teach the class, contributing thoughts to concepts when asked by the teacher to do so.

  • Assist and monitor students in group work or during sharing times such as show and tell, recitation times and center rotations. 

  • Assist in redirecting students who are not showing kindness to others.

  • Assist in transition points of the day such as bathroom breaks, rest time, going to specials, and lunch.
