Job Description

YOUR MISSION

The opportunity

We’re seeking a detail‑oriented and commercially minded Payroll Officer to join our HR team and take ownership of end‑to‑end payroll delivery across Australia and New Zealand.

This role is internally titled HR Services Executive, reflecting its integration within the HR function. Externally, it is positioned as Payroll Officer, as payroll is the clear core of the role, spanning payroll processing, statutory compliance, systems, reporting and optimisation in a complex retail environment.

You’ll be the trusted expert ensuring our people are paid accurately, compliantly and on time, while proactively improving payroll processes, data integrity and cost control.

This is a hands‑on payroll role with real ownership and visibility. You’ll manage payroll operations end to end, partner closely with Finance and HR, and play a key role in improving payroll accuracy, compliance and efficiency across the business.

Payroll processing & statutory compliance

You’ll own the full payroll lifecycle and ensure all legislative and statutory obligations are met without exception.

  • End‑to‑end processing of fortnightly and monthly payrolls for Australia and New Zealand

  • Managing payroll enquiries and resolving pay‑related issues

  • Payroll tax calculations, lodgements and annual returns

  • Managing off‑cycle payments, corrections and adjustments

  • Maintaining payroll calendars, cut‑off dates, approvals and controls

  • Owning all statutory and regulatory obligations including STP, superannuation, KiwiSaver, PAYG, final pays and audit support

  • Supporting Finance during month‑end, quarter‑end and year‑end processes

  • Handling all payroll data with strict confidentiality and data privacy standards

Payroll systems, data & reporting

You’ll ensure payroll systems and data are accurate, reliable and audit‑ready at all times.

  • Issuing employment contracts, variations and leaver documentation

  • Maintaining employee and payroll‑related data in Workday and payroll systems

  • Reconciling payroll outputs and investigating variances

  • Supporting payroll, HR, Finance and statutory reporting requirements

  • Acting as a payroll system subject matter expert (e.g. Workday / CloudPay interface)

Business partnering & payroll support

You’ll be a key point of contact for employees, managers and HR on all payroll‑related matters.

  • Supporting payroll outcomes for onboarding, role changes and terminations

  • Providing clear guidance on pay, entitlements, leave, deductions and payroll impacts

  • Educating employees on payslips, deductions and payroll timing

  • Monitoring payroll KPIs (accuracy, timeliness, compliance) and flagging risks early

Payroll optimisation, compliance & cost control

You’ll actively improve how payroll operates across the business.

  • Staying up to date with changes to legislation, awards, EBAs, tax, superannuation and leave entitlements

  • Reviewing payroll processes to improve efficiency, accuracy and compliance

  • Analysing retail rosters, hours, overtime and allowances to identify cost leakage and risk

  • Proactively identifying payroll risks, trends and cost drivers

  • Partnering with Retail, Operations and Finance to improve payroll practices and labour cost management

What success looks like

  • Payroll is delivered accurately, compliantly and on time — every cycle

  • Payroll data is trusted, auditable and reliable

  • Compliance risks are identified early and managed effectively

  • Managers and employees receive clear, timely and professional payroll support

  • Payroll processes continue to improve through your initiative

YOUR TALENT

About you

You’re calm under pressure, meticulous with detail and proud of getting things right. You enjoy being the person others depend on, and you bring a service mindset to everything you do, balancing precision with approachability.

  • Demonstrated payroll experience, ideally across Australia and New Zealand

  • Solid knowledge of payroll legislation and compliance requirements

  • Exceptional attention to detail and a strong accuracy mindset

  • Clear communicator who enjoys supporting employees and leaders

  • Advanced Excel capability; experience with Workday or similar HRIS is highly regarded

  • Well organised, proactive and comfortable managing competing priorities

Why join us?

This is more than a payroll role, it’s a chance to build credibility, visibility and influence within a respected HR team. You’ll be trusted with responsibility, supported to succeed, and given the opportunity to grow your skill set while doing work that genuinely matters.

  • A payroll‑focused role embedded within a collaborative HR team

  • Exposure across payroll, HR services, systems and people data

  • Hybrid working and a supportive, professional HR environment

  • Opportunity to build credibility as a payroll specialist while broadening HR capability
