About the Department

The Department of Corrections, Division of Health and Rehabilitation Services, is recruiting for a full-time Regional Dental Officer/Dentist, located in Anchorage, Alaska.

The Department of Corrections, Division of Health and Rehabilitation Services, is recruiting for a full-time Regional Dental Officer/Dentist, located in Goose Creek Correctional Center (GCCC) in Mackenzie Point, Alaska.

What You Will Be Doing:

This position reviews patients' medical histories, diagnoses and provides medically essential dental treatment, maintains accurate patient records, keeps up with best practices, new technologies and innovations in the field of dentistry.


Dental Officers provide clinical direction and supervise a team consisting of a dental assistant and a dental hygienist, collaborating with two other regional dentists and dental teams. The Dental Officer also consults with department medical & mental health staff.


Typical work hours of 37.5 hours per week, five days a week approximately 7:30 am - 3:30 pm, although this may vary with travel. This position requires in state travel with travel compensation provided depending on clinical location.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

This position provides medically essential dental care to male or female patients in Anchorage, Eagle River, Wasilla, Palmer, and other locations depending on departmental needs. A Correctional officer may escort the prisoner to and from the dental clinic and may be present during procedures depending on the inmate security classification or concern from staff.

  • Team Building: Inspires and fosters team commitment, spirit, pride, and trust. Facilitates cooperation and motivates team members to accomplish group goals.
  • Health Physics: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods pertaining to the protection of people, their environment, and equipment from hazards (for example, radiation or hazardous chemicals) and the control of radioactive material.
  • Public Health: Applies knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, methods, and tools associated with protecting and improving the health of people and their communities, including, promoting healthy lifestyles, researching disease and/or injury prevention, and/or detecting, preventing, and responding to infectious diseases.

Position Duties

Must possess a Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) and be eligible to practice medicine in the State of Alaska.

PREA NOTIFICATION

The Department of Corrections follows and maintains federal and state requirements standards including, but not limited to, Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards which apply to all public and private institutions that house adult or juvenile offenders. PREA standards preclude the department from hiring or promoting anyone who has engaged in, or been convicted of any conduct which would violate PREA standards related to sexual assault including:

  • Sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution;

  • Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described above.


CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKS/APSIN/ACOMS

Please be aware – this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.


FINGERPRINT NOTICE

All Department of Corrections employees are required to be fingerprinted. The successful candidate must pass a criminal history check.


DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT

Applicants must possess a valid driver's license. Proof of licensure will be required prior to reporting to duty.
