Duties

Operates necessary levers to raise and lower spuds and operates swing and hoisting engines to move the cutter-head to correct elevation for dredging to proper depth and to advance the dredge in the cut.,Monitors vacuum and pressure gages, etc. Changes speed of cutter and swing motors to obtain most efficient pump operation and maximum advance.,Ensures cut is dredged to the proper width as determined by the placement of centerline buoys or ranges as established by the Dredge Inspector.,Ensures that the proper width is obtained by the use of the gyro compass in the dredge pilot house.,Signals Mate or Master Tender Operator to move swing line and hold anchor out.,Sights approaching river traffic, signaling to the Master of the craft to inform him of side on which he should pass, and if necessary, moves dredge from channel with assistance.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a LEVERMAN (DR) without more than normal supervision. Operates the necessary levers to raise and lower spuds as well as operate swing and hoisting engines to move the cutter-head vertically and ensure that the cut is dredged to the proper width. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. USCG license required: 100 TON MASTER of STEAM and MOTOR VESSELS (WESTERN RIVERS) or GREATER. This license is the minimum requirement that includes testing related to USCG "Rules of the Road" for navigation, covering location and relevance of navigation lights and aids to navigation, proper procedures for passing and communications with other towing vessels, whistle signals and directing of commercial traffic in and around dredge cuts in the navigation channel. Must hold an USCG (Master of Towing) endorsement to qualify for the (DR) Pilot, XH-5784-14 dual rated position. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element) Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Dexterity and Safety Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Operation of Equipment and Machinery Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Physical Efforts: Light to moderate physical effort is required for continuous standing and operating of various controls. Incumbent must have color and depth perception and be able to see in low visibility conditions in order to navigate a dredge. Working Conditions: Work is performed in the pilot house, on deck and in other locations of the vessel. Spends most of the time on the deck. Occasionally goes outside in all kinds of weather to attend to duties, being exposed to the elements and subject to slipping on wet decks. Danger of drowning is present in case of accident. There is danger from traffic hazards, particularly in foggy weather and at night.
