FIRE TRAINEE
Position Purpose:
A. This position is to prepare future Firefighters for Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS (AMFEMS). The trainee will perform daily responsibilities at The Fire Academy of Kentucky, prepare for and pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician exam, prepare for IFSAC certifications assigned, and become skilled at an entry level for firefighting.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D or equivalent

Must be a minimum of 18 years old

Must be of good moral character, with no criminal or felony record inconsistent with the provisions of this paragraph. Unacceptable will be persons who have been convicted of a felony, or who have any criminal action pending against them

An applicant may be disqualified for multiple misdemeanors, an unacceptable criminal record, or multiple traffic violations

Must submit to a pre-employment drug screening & pre-employment polygraph examination.

Must pass a pre-employment physical agility test

Must wear personal protective and safety equipment as mandated by OSHA

Must have received an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions if having served in any branch of the armed forces of The United States

Must be in excellent health based on department medical standards. Any job offer made will be contingent on passing a battery of medical examinations including a stress test

Members must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license prior to operating any vehicle owned by the Anchorage Middletown Fire and EMS. The license must be a full operator’s license. Instructional or temporary learning permits do not meet this requirement.

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks

Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work

Communicates with individuals in person and utilizes all types of communication media in a professional and respectful manner in accordance with AMFEMS policies

Lifts and carries items weighing in excess of 100 pounds in a team setting

Spends prolonged periods of time exposed to the elements

Endures extended periods of cardiovascular stress

Climbs ladders; hauls hose; wears/carries required protective clothing and gear in the course of training or fire suppression/rescue activities; and operates extrication equipment

Operates fire vehicles by both day and night; observes emergency scene actions taking place; observes traffic in the vicinity of an emergency scene; observes fire code violations; and reviews and prepares reports and correspondence

The Trainee will be continually evaluated and scored on their ability to perform job related skills and tasks based on IFSAC FF I and II job sheets. Failure to meet these standards may result in disciplinary action up to and including removal from Academy

Must have valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) upon hire and to apply for state incentive

Upon completion of the EMT class, Trainees will have up to six attempts to pass the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician exam. Trainees are required to obtain and maintain a Kentucky EMT-Basic certification prior to graduation of the academy. If they are unsuccessful after six attempts, the Trainee will not graduate from Academy

Notify their supervisor of any equipment malfunction, lost or missing equipment, and/or needed equipment including personal, station, or apparatus

Do not publicly criticize instructions or orders they have received

Treat superior officers, associates, and the public respectfully and with a professional demeanor

Be responsible for their issued equipment (i.e. PPE, uniforms, radios, etc.), including routine upkeep and maintenance. Return issued equipment to the appropriate Division upon request, or termination

Upon successful completion of AMFEMS Academy the Trainee will be promoted to the rank of Firefighter/EMT and be placed on probation for 12 months AMFEMS Probation policy #303.02
Special Position Requirements

The Trainee may be required to perform all job functions under hazardous and/or austere conditions, while being exposed to all weather types and/or under extreme stress.
General Employment Provisions

All employees are required to comply with all District policies, standard operations procedures (SOPs), standard operating guidelines (SOGs), directives, and lawful orders.

All hazardous duty employees must successfully maintain an annual fit for duty and maintain the Kentucky Fire Commission required annual training.

Academy Notes:
This position will have an anticipated start date of June 29, 2026. Successful applicants will have orientation from June 29, 2026 - July 3, 2026 that will take place at Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS. Following the orientation, successful applicants will begin the Emergency Medical Technician portion of the academy from July 6, 2026 - August 7, 2026. This portion of the academy runs Monday-Friday and requires on-site residency at The Fire Academy of Kentucky during the week. You will be home on weekends. Transportation to and from, along with lodging and meals will all be provided.
The fire academy itself will take place beginning August 17, 2026, and will last 13 consecutive weeks ending on November 13, 2026. Successful candidates will then return to the department to complete department specific training. You will remain Monday-Friday for an additional 2 weeks. However, you will be able to go home at the completion of class each day for these 2 weeks. At that point, graduation will be held and successful candidates will be assigned to their stations and will begin their 48/96-hour shift.
Successful candidates must have completed the Firefighter Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) prior to attending the academy. Details on when and how to complete this step will be given to successful candidates.
