The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) performs moderate‑ and high‑complexity laboratory testing in accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. This role supports accurate diagnosis and patient care through high‑quality laboratory services while upholding Santiam Hospital’s mission, values, and safety standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities




  • Perform moderate and high complexity laboratory testing across multiple disciplines in compliance with CLIA and hospital standards. 

  • Evaluate test validity, ensure accuracy of results, and recognize atypical or critical findings. 

  • Report critical values promptly according to hospital policy.

  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and document laboratory instrumentation and equipment. 

  • Perform and document quality control, calibration, maintenance, and corrective actions. 

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment; follow infection control and biohazard safety practices. 

  • Participate in ongoing competency assessments, proficiency testing, and performance improvement activities.

  • Communicate effectively with providers, nursing, and other departments regarding laboratory services and results.

  • Assist with training and support of laboratory assistants, phlebotomists, and students as assigned.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by laboratory leadership.
