GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Supervisory Epidemiologist for Infectious Diseases provides advanced scientific leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight for infectious disease surveillance, investigation, and response activities. This position oversees a team of epidemiologists and public health professionals, ensuring high-quality data analysis, timely reporting, and
coordinated outbreak response. The role requires deep subject-matter expertise in infectious diseases, strong analytical skills, and the ability to guide complex public health programs.
Job Duties:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Oversees daily program operations by directing workload distribution, ensures quality assurance, and maintains alignment with organizational priorities and all tribal, state, and federal reporting requirements.
• Leads advanced epidemiologic analyses such as trend monitoring, cluster detection, and evaluation of infectious disease patterns.
• Leads the team in development and refinement of surveillance methodologies, case definitions, analytic protocols, and reviews all epidemiologic reports and data products for accuracy and clarity.
• Serves as a subject matter expert to leadership, clinical partners, community stakeholders, providing guidance on infection disease risks, mitigation strategies, and interpretation of complex data.
• Directs outbreak investigations and ensures rapid, coordinated response efforts including staff mobilization, communication, and high-quality epidemiologic documentation.
• Collaborates closely with public health preparedness coordinators, clinical services, and environmental health teams to strengthen collaborations on preparedness and response capacity across the Tribe.
• Leads key partnerships and communication efforts serving as a primary liaison for other Cherokee Nation government departments, tribal partners, state and federal agencies.
• Communicates epidemiologic findings in clear, actionable formats, and represents the program in meetings, workshops, and collaborative initiatives.
• Develops and implements policies, protocols, and standard operating procedures.
• Ensures compliance with reporting laws and data governance standards.
• Leads program evaluation activities to improve efficiency, data quality, and overall service delivery.
• Responds to after-hours reports of high priority infectious disease cases or clusters providing immediate public health guidance.
• Leads and participates in rapid response teams to investigate, contain, and prevent disease spread, including potential deployment to field sites.
• Performs other duties, tasks, and services consistent with this position as assigned.
LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY
• This position directly oversees epidemiologists and public health staff.
• Sets work procedures, priorities, levels of responsibility, and objectives.
Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS
• Master’s degree in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, infectious diseases, applied epidemiology or related field.
• Three (3) years of experience in a related field.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
CERTIFICATES, LICENES, REGISTRATIONS
• Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets the requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
• The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
