About the Department

The City of Jersey City is seeking a Community Relations Specialist to join the Department of Infrastructure. Under the supervisor’s direction, the Community Relations Specialist assists in the organization and development of a community relations program to advance community harmony and performs field work to carry out the objectives. This candidate will organize and facilitate community meetings and groups of publics facilitated by the City. Liaise with other public and civic groups, organize, support the advancement of, and responds to public requests related to infrastructure, Parks and Transportation for the City of Jersey City. Does related work as required. Position Duties

Job Duties:
• Organizes an effective work program for community relations.
• Plans, develops, and executes an approved program of Community outreach and public meetings.
• Develops and maintains a harmonious liaison between the community and various government or
private agencies.
• Encourages community groups to organize and negotiate with private organizations and government
agencies to promote acceptance of the objectives of a program to advance community harmony.
• Understands Infrastructure and Transportation projects and anticipates impacts to community
groups, and residents
• Facilities and organizes meetings of city and/or city organizations on the topics of infrastructure and
transportation.
• Organizes community requests and feedback and actively communicates with various parts of the
department and other departments to advance resolution.
• Liaison with partner organizations, including transit providers, to represent city and to request service
and improvements to advance policy goals of the city.
• Speaks to private, civic, government, fraternal, and religious organizations to promote
peaceful neighborhood and school integration as it relates to community harmony.
• Gathers and compiles statistical data pertaining to changes in neighborhood and to project
anticipated problems.
• Prepares reports.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and
computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Experience:
• Two (2) years of experience in community relations or community organization work concerning
intergroup relations.
Required License:
• Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a
vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

• Knowledge of planning and implementation of a program for the purpose of promoting cooperation,
understanding, and harmony between government agencies, community groups, and the public.
• Knowledge of the collection, preparation, editing, and distribution of information for the purpose of
promoting the services and activities of the organization.
• Knowledge of methods effective in securing the cooperation of civic, business, and community
groups, government agencies, and the public in general.
• Knowledge of preparing reports and official correspondence.
• Knowledge of the maintenance of essential records and files.
• Knowledge of the attitudes of community groups and the public with regard to government
agencies.
• Ability to implement a community relations program to promote cooperation, understanding, and
harmony between the government agency and the public.
• Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret significant information
• Ability to serve as a facilitator between groups and individuals in the interest of resolving problems,
promoting cooperation, and implementing a community relations program.
• Ability to speak before large and varied groups of people and lead discussions.
• Ability to work harmoniously with associates, subordinates, other groups, and individuals.
• Ability to prepare reports and correspondence
