POSITION SUMMARY
The Health Information Specialist is responsible for providing excellent customer service to Prairie Ridge Health Hospital Medical Staff and their respective clinics. This position receives and processes requests for health information from internal and external customers in a timely manner, and in accordance with HIPAA, Wisconsin statutes, and, Prairie Ridge Health Hospital confidentiality policy. This position identifies researches and resolves discrepancies or inaccuracies within the paper or electronic health record related to dates of services and patient identification information. They maintain the integrity of the Master Patient Index (MPI). They analyze and process medical records (Inpatients, Swing Beds, ASPs, Ambulatory Procedures, Outpatients, and ER/UC) to facilitate timely completion (within 15 days) and coding (per quality standards) of records. They also conduct the annual medical records purge and destruction project. This position requires independent research and problem-solving skills, and typically functions without daily supervisory oversight.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS/LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION
- High school diploma (or equivalent) required.
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) preferred
- 1-3 or more years of previous experience working in a medical records setting strongly preferred (clinic or hospital) or other applicable healthcare setting
- Medical terminology preferred.
- Basic level of proficiency with Microsoft Excel (or other spreadsheet software) required. This includes the ability to: create and utilize daily and monthly logs; create summary reports; insert simple formulas; and, manipulate the design and appearance of worksheets.
- Basic word processing proficiency required. This includes the ability to: generate basic business letters and memos; create and utilize form letters; and, generate professional-appearing notices and e-mails.
- Previous customer service experience required.
- Working knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) preferred.
FTE: 1.0 (40 hours per week).
Shift: Monday-Friday, days
