Job Description

Sojourner Advocate - Mobile Advocate

Full-time (40 hours/week) or Part-time (16 or more hours/week) Shifts: Mostly evenings and weekends with some weekday first shift hours 

Pay: $20.00/hour or $21.50/hour for fluent/bilingual in Spanish and English

This is a temporary grant funded position with funding through December 31, 2026.

Overview

The Sojourner Advocate – Mobile Advocate will conduct outreach to raise awareness at community sites and provide basic advocacy to survivors who connect at those sites. The Advocate will bring a strong knowledge of domestic violence services and resources to these community sites. This position will be required to travel throughout Milwaukee County.

What are the Job Responsibilities?

  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct outreach efforts to support community members and educate them regarding domestic abuse.
  • Plan, coordinate and organize information sessions and resource events. 
  • Research locations and local resources; assist with managing logistics, coordination of events, and development of collateral materials.
  • Assess the needs of survivors who attend community events, address emergency needs and safety planning, and help them access resources through other Sojourner programs and the community. Utilize independent critical skills to identify additional challenges and make additional connections. Share basic information about proceedings in criminal, civil, and family law. Share basic information about abuse-related risk factors and protective factors.
  • Maintain an understanding of Sojourner’s partnerships including what services are provided and how to make appropriate referrals. Know community resources and maintain active connections to them. 
  • Maintain activity documentation and computerized data files, including outcome information. 
  • Assist in the development of an outreach plan which includes working with neighborhood groups, community based organizations, faith based organizations, etc. to disseminate information on domestic violence and available resources.
  • Work cooperatively as a team member, both internally within Sojourner and externally with community organizations. Build and maintain positive communication and professional relationships. 
  • Ability to work a regular schedule and have regular attendance at the workplace.
  • Practice agency policies and safety in the workplace.
  • Participate in all mandatory meetings and trainings.

  • All other work-related duties and projects as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED. Experience working with clients in crisis and/or who have experienced trauma. Knowledge of trauma informed care practices, confidentiality, and active listening as well as documentation.

Preferred Education and Experience

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree is preferred. Experience with the issue of domestic violence and/or on a crisis hotline preferred. Minimum two years professional experience in advocacy, case management, food service, or related field; or a combination of education and experience. CPR certified. Bilingual in Spanish and English.


Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Communication Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, logs, and policy and procedure manuals. Ability to prepare safety plans, intake information, charts and logs, and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively with distressed callers, residents, and other employees of the organization and complete required paperwork and reports accurately and timely. Bilingual in Spanish a plus.

Reasoning Ability 

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. 

Other Skills and Abilities

Requires the ability to operate a variety of standard business machines, such as a computer and the job related software, a keyboard, calculator, telephone, FAX, photocopier, etc. 

Reliable Transportation

Must have reliable transportation. If driving, must have valid Driver’s License, insurable driving record, and automobile insurance with minimum limits of:

1. Liability Coverage: $25,000 per person and $50,000 of 2 or more people for injury or death

2. Property Damage: $10,000 

3. Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist: $25,000 per person and $50,000 for 2 or more people injured
