Since 1971, the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board has provided the highest quality of behavioral health services to residents of the cities of Hampton and Newport News, Virginia, offering a comprehensive array of programs for both children and adults living with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and/or substance use disorders.
The Hampton Roads Clinic (HRC) offers a unique and specialized program for adults with a long history of dependence on opiates such as prescription pain medications, heroin and morphine. At HRC, we provide a comprehensive outpatient treatment and recovery services for individuals who have an opioid use diagnosis using methadone prescribed by a licensed physician. In addition to offering the evidence-based medication, methadone, we provide a continuum of psycho-social services to include counseling, peer support, care coordination and referrals to other social support services.

As a Licensed Practical Nurse at the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board serving the Hampton Roads Clinic, you will play a vital role in client care by processing medication orders as prescribed by clinic psychiatrists. Your responsibilities will include securing, storing, and disposing of medications, while meticulously preparing related documentation. You will administer and record medications, providing routine supportive counseling during medical assessments and treatment. Conducting physical assessments and ensuring complete documentation of client behavioral and medical status are essential parts of your role. Additionally, you will manage inventory by maintaining stock levels of medications and reordering as necessary.
Your duties will also encompass scheduling and assisting physicians with medical examinations, dispensing methadone while maintaining secure inventories, and collecting laboratory specimens for analysis. You'll follow up on all medical concerns and oversee the self-administration of client medications, ensuring comprehensive care and support for each individual you serve.
what we are looking for in a licensed practical nurse
To excel as a Licensed Practical Nurse at the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, candidates must possess a comprehensive skill set tailored to the unique demands of the role.
To qualify for this position, candidates must have the following:
- Must be a graduate of an accredited LPN school of nursing.
- One (1) year of experience in the administration of medication or in a substance abuse treatment, psychiatric setting or long term care facility including the dispensing of narcotic medication.
- Current and valid State Licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse from the Virginia State Board of Nursing.
Candidates should have thorough knowledge of methadone administration, including safety precautions, and an understanding of the common medications prescribed to our client population. Familiarity with regulations governing the security, dispensing, and disposal of controlled substances is crucial. Strong supportive counseling skills, along with the ability to accurately maintain client records and monitor methadone inventory, are vital. Additionally, candidates should be well-versed in legal procedures relating to mental health care, including HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2, to ensure compliance and provide the highest level of care.
