Job Description

The Principal or Fellow Engineer provides senior technical direction and authority within the field of expertise, guiding mentorship and research initiatives. Serves as a trusted advisor for complex technical challenges.  Provides expert guidance on use of shape memory alloy/Nitinol. Supports marketing campaigns with technical input and serves as an industry spokesperson in customer-facing and industry forums. Operates as a highly autonomous contributor with significant visibility and trust.

Additionally;

  • Serves as a senior technical authority within defined fields of expertise (e.g., shape memory alloys/Nitinol, material science, laser physics, or other advanced manufacturing disciplines).
  • Leads targeted research initiatives aligned with business strategy, customer needs, and future technology investments.
  • Identifies, evaluates, and advances emerging technologies, processes, and scientific developments relevant to NNI’s manufacturing capabilities.
  • Provides strategic technical direction aligned with long-term business objectives, industry and technical evolution.
  • May author or co-author technical papers, white papers, patents and publications to reinforce the company’s technical leadership
  • Provides expert-level technical guidance and root-cause analysis for highly complex or novel challenges encountered during process development or production.
  • Acts as an escalation point for technical decisions involving fundamental material behavior, physics-based process limitations, and non-standard engineering problems.
  • Defines technical frameworks, methodologies, and best practices within the Principal Engineer’s domain of expertise.
  • Mentors and technically develops Engineering and PDC staff through knowledge transfer, technical review, and research collaboration.
  • Advises Engineering and executive leadership on technical risk, opportunity, and long-term capability development.
  • Supports supplier and external technical engagement where deep subject-matter expertise is required.
  • Represents NNI as a technical expert in customer-facing discussions, industry forums, and conferences, supporting brand recognition and credibility.
  • Provides technical input to Marketing to support campaigns, publications, and messaging related to advanced manufacturing and core technologies.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required, with advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) strongly preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in a technical field, with research experience required.
  • Experience with shape memory alloys/Nitinol, material science, laser physics or other advanced manufacturing discipline required.
  • Nitinol experience strongly preferred
  • Record of published technical work (e.g., journals, patents, white papers) and recognized technical leadership.
  • Established industry recognition within area of expertise.
  • Manufacturing experience is preferred where it complements and applies research outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve highly complex technical problems grounded in fundamental science and engineering.
  • Public speaking experience required, including conferences, customer presentations, or industry forums.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for internal influence and external technical representation.
